Our second blog post focuses on step 1 of explicit and effective vocabulary teaching. Phonics isn't just for primary and has a massive part to play in acquiring new words. Oh, and there is a great idiom about Grandma and egg sucking!

The story so far… students’ vocabulary is poor and being word poor impacts ‘everything’ from mental health to socio-economic status. The vocabulary gap is compounding and creates further difficulties for students. As educators, we need to make them word rich and create a level playing field ...

One for Father's Day. The word father has Old English origins and is linked to the Old Saxon word fader, which has close connections to the Old Dutch word for father, vader. The etymology of the name was a clue all along!

Why vocabulary teaching matters more than ever. Our first ever blog post. We hope you find it both interesting and entertaining.

Like a Year 9 student repeatedly asking to go to the toilet, the research on vocabulary repeats itself time and time again. A broad and robust vocabulary is essential for students to thrive, not only academically but also in social interactions and communications. Language unlocks doors, reveals the...

Who are we part deux, I’m Jill—a teacher with over 20 years of experience—and the other half of Emma, the co-founder of Scode. When Emma shared her ideas, research, and enthusiasm about integrating phonics, etymology, and morphology to teach spelling in key stage 2, it all clicked for me as a primary teacher. I remember asking Emma, “Yes, but how and where do we start?” With Emma’s creative genius and my organisational skills, we became the perfect match. Over lockdowns and beyond, we developed a comprehensive scheme that lightens the workload for our colleagues in the classroom. My role as a part-time inclusion teacher and school advisor keeps me at the forefront of education and in touch with this ever changing sector. My best days are spent visiting Scode schools, seeing our work in action and hearing how it is transforming the teaching of spelling.

Some great strategies in this article. I especially like the section on exploring synonyms and shades of meaning to emphasise the importance of word choice. We use PP to easily create different versions of synonym scales, keeping engagement high. Noun Project is fab for adding icons to further support students understanding. Add an idiom in for good measure. Idioms can be a powerful way to explore the spoken word and language in context.

I kid you not. Jill and I have just had a panic about missing a TEAMS meeting with a school. The teacher even rang up to see when we were joining. In a panic I logged on only to be greeted by a Year 5 student who wanted to get better at spelling. He hopes to be a teacher when he grows up. He asked my advice about spelling and "how does it work?" He finished by thanking me for my time. He rang up! Tenacity in a nutshell!

Who are we? I'm Emma a teacher of over 20 years and one of the founders of Scode. As a child and teenager I struggled with spelling and reading. As a mum to dyslexic girls I was motivated to make a change. Scode was born as I started creating resources to support my daughter. I wrote, invented and created literacy activities that would be fun for us to do at home. I repeated these with the students in my class and it became apparent that this was an approach that was going to be beneficial for so many young readers and writers.

I am not a great finisher so this project soon took a back seat and life got in the way. Fast forward a few years and the lock-downs hit. In a state of confusion I dug out the piles of paper to help me with homeschooling and to fill the endless days! I shared them with Jill to help support her daughter and we haven't looked back. As a fellow teacher with years of rich classroom experience Jill is everything I am not, organised, strategic and realistic. Together we have worked like Trojans to create quality educational resources that allow children to thrive without seeing our colleagues go under.

As a team we play as hard as we work and you will often find us toasting the smallest of achievements with a glass or two!
