Things I wish I knew as a student

(Now that I am a teacher, that feels old)

1. Don't compare yourself to others in your class because your strengths can be their weaknesses, their weaknesses may be your strengths, we are all different.

2. One bad test does not mean you are bad at a subject

3. How you perform in your subject will change overtime, sometimes you will score higher and sometimes lower, it fluctuates

4. A grade on a test does not determine your self worth

5. There are options other than A levels, they are not the be all and end all.

James came to us in year 10 when he was at grade 5s in GCSE physics and maths.
James struggled with the following:
❌ He found certain topic areas difficult in physics and maths and struggled with exam questions.
❌ James found it hard to complete questions under a time limit
❌ James didn’t have a plan and strategy for his revision so didn’t know what to focus on

James worked with two of our tutors to fix these problems. With regular lessons and homework, we were able to help James by:
✅ Going over the topics using a ground-up approach to make sure he understood the concepts
✅ Practising hundreds of exam questions to increase his confidence
✅ Completing questions strictly under timed conditions
✅ Creating a revision plan so he could cover all the content in a timely manner
