From Peter Davis, MAFA Archivist:
Last Sunday’s Antiques Roadshow from Beaumaris Castle featured two lovely drawings by MAFA member Charles Tunnicliffe (1901-1979). You can watch the clip here.
The preliminary sketches were for two detailed woodland drawings that he created for the Forestry Commission in the 1960s. They were valued on the show for £500 each (with his finished drawings estimated to be worth £5,000 each)!
Charles Tunnicliffe was elected as full member MAFA in 1929 and lived in Macclesfield at the time (before settling in Anglesey in 1947) . He is known for his illustrations, drawings, wood engravings and etchings of nature and wildlife. He remained a member of MAFA until his death, aged 78, on the 7th Feb 1979.
Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, MAFA, was created in 1859. Today it has a membership of over 110 diverse and talented artists. Our painters, scultptors and printmakers represent the best in fine art across the region.
