New-term nerves... or is your gut telling you it's something more? 🎒👇

The start of September brings butterflies for almost every child. New classrooms, new routines, and harder schoolwork mean the first couple of weeks are always an adjustment.

Usually, those worries settle as routines fall into place. But what if the anxiety isn't fading? What if the struggle to keep up starts right away?

As both a specialist dyslexia assessor and a mum to four neurodivergent kids, I know this feeling from both sides. Recently, my son has had to return to school after time off for surgery. Watching him try to get back on track after missing so much classroom time is a stark reminder of just how quickly a child's confidence can slip when they feel left behind.

🔍 Typical First-Week Jitters vs Red Flags
What’s Normal in September:

A little nervousness about teachers or friends.

Tiredness after long school days.

The classic "Sunday night blues."

When It Might Be Something More:

đź”´ Morning tummy aches or homework meltdowns linked specifically to reading or writing.

đź”´ Extreme after-school exhaustion (spending double the energy just to get through the day).

đź”´ Avoidance tactics - acting as the "class clown" or going quiet so they aren't asked to read aloud or copy off the board.

đź”´ A sudden drop in confidence at secondary school as subjects like History demand much heavier reading.

đź’ˇ Why Early Action Makes All the Difference
If your intuition says your child's anxiety comes from struggling to keep up, listen to that gut feeling.

Children don't simply "outgrow" literacy difficulties. Without the right strategies, they often start believing they just aren't smart enough.

A diagnostic dyslexia assessment isn't about sticking a label on your child -it's about unlocking how their brain works best, finding their hidden strengths, and getting them the exact classroom support they deserve.

đź’› You don't have to guess or figure this out alone.

Whether you just want a quick chat about what you're seeing at home, specialist 1-to-1 tutoring, or a full diagnostic assessment, I'm here to help you navigate it.

This week, we’ve been using our alphabet arcs to do some hands-on learning.

While it might look like a simple puzzle, alphabet work plays a crucial role in building foundational literacy skills:

✨ Sequencing & Order: Mastering alphabetical order helps children navigate dictionaries, indexes, and organise visual information efficiently.

✨ Working Memory Training: Once the alphabet is fully sequenced, the real brain workout begins! I use the completed arc for quick-fire memory games—like recalling letters before/after a target letter, missing letter challenges, and auditory sequencing exercises.
Building strong working memory helps students retain information longer, follow multi-step instructions, and read with greater confidence! 🧠✨

Wondering how to best support your child's learning?

Let’s find the right starting point. 🔍✨

Every child learns differently, and when they are struggling in school, it can be hard to know what step to take next. At Dyslexia and Education Support, we offer three distinct types of assessments to bring your family total clarity, peace of mind, and an actionable plan.

Not sure which one you need? Here is a quick guide to help you choose:

📊 1. The Dyslexia Screener (The Quick First Step)

Best for: Parents who suspect dyslexia but want a quick, cost-effective initial check before committing to a full evaluation.

What it does: Flags up indicators of dyslexia and gives you immediate, practical strategies to use at home and school. (Note: Does not provide a formal diagnosis).

📑 2. The Full Diagnostic Assessment (The Lifelong Roadmap)

Best for: Families looking for a formal, official confirmation of dyslexia that stays with them for life.

What it does: Provides a definitive, professional diagnosis and a comprehensive report. This official paperwork is essential for understanding their long-term needs and is crucial for applying for the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) if they head to university.

🧠 3. The Comprehensive Educational Assessment (The Learning Profile)

Best for: Children who are struggling generally where you need to understand how they process information, as well as younger children (under 8) who aren't quite old enough yet for a formal dyslexia assessment.

What it does: Pinpoints your child's exact cognitive strengths and hidden learning barriers, creating a tailored roadmap of support for parents, teachers, and tutors.

No matter where your child is on their educational journey, getting the right insights early can transform frustration into confidence.
