We all know what it means to spot for someone on bench press. It means being there, ready to take the weight when a friend struggles with that last few reps… to give them the confidence to give it everything leaving nothing in reserve, knowing that even if you don’t make it… someone has your back, someone will take that bar and help you re-rack… reset… slap you on the back and to tell you… ‘five minutes the we go again’ and even if you don’t manage it… they are there to say ‘you almost had it… you’ve got it next time.’
This ‘Culture’… this brotherhood… (I include women too ladies don’t be afraid to ask a man to spot you, they love feeling useful and will ‘big’ you up every time… and the same goes for men.. don’t be afraid to ask a woman to spot you. Spotting bench press is essentially the top half of a deadlift and women are built for that sh*t…)
Is what I love about the gym culture… especially our gym culture here we help each other achieve our goals, we support, encourage and celebrate people we have been friends with with for years or people we barely know… but you know they have got you.
Now… please can we translate this ‘culture’ into normal everyday life?
Be there for each other? Check up and check in on each other?
Let people you think might need it… that if they falter… you will help take the load… until they are ready to go again.
Let them know you will be there everytime… to watch them succeed, or steady their hand/heart and push them on… until they do.
So please,,,, next time you see someone bench pressing life… just check they are ok… ask if they need a ‘spot’ and I mean this everywhere! 💚💪
