August 4th is international owl awareness day, join us in celebrating these incredible creatures!

They are the ultimate predator, many can fly silently their feathers have comb or feathered edges which breaks up the airflow allowing them to fly quietly.

The facial disk funnel sound to their ears which are asymmetrical at different heights and different angles on their head, this means they can pinpoint where a mouse is in total darkness.

Owls large eyes are fixed in place, so instead of moving their eyes to look around they move their head, they can rotate their head 270°!!

Perfect day for a summer garden party ☀️❤️ such a lovely day,! One of our regular visits so lovely to see lots of familiar faces (and a few new ones 🙂) enjoying a beautiful summer day!
Lulu 🐢 enjoyed a a little wander (don’t worry she was supervised) she maybe fancied a go on the microphone 🎤 🎶 🎵😂

Enrichment! It’s not just for zoo animals! 🐇🦜🐹 Our pets lives need enriching too! Here is Audrey & Pamela enjoying a treat ball with some hawthorn browse 🌿 In the wild animals spend a lot of their time searching for food and then processing it and other things like avoiding predators, but they don’t need to do many of these things when living with humans, so it’s important to keep them entertained ❤️

We’ve been keeping Pepe cool during this hot weather with some “veggie bobbing” ☀️🍠🫑💦
During hot spells we like to find ways to keep our animals cool. Seasonal environmental enrichment, like using sprinklers, paddling pools and ice during the summer.
It can be easy to fall into a routine using the same enrichment, but this can lose its novelty and no longer enriches the animal so it doesn’t work.
It’s important to keep mixing things up!

Wow it’s been hot 🥵 wildlife can really struggle to find water during these hot spells, so it’s a great idea to leave some out, remember to change it regularly ❤️🦉🐸🦊🦔🐿️💦
