St George’s Ascot is entering one of the most significant periods of change in its history.

From September 2027, the school will begin welcoming boys, before its planned combination with St George’s School Windsor Castle to create a new co-educational through school for pupils aged 3–18.

Following a recent visit, our Head of Business Development, David Cotter, reflects on what makes St George’s distinctive today - from its deliberately small scale and emphasis on individual attention, to its creative culture, flexible boarding and approach to modern family life.

And, importantly, what families should understand as the school enters this next chapter.

The Ivy League may dominate the conversation around American higher education, but it represents only a small part of an exceptionally diverse university system.

Institutions such as Stanford, MIT, Duke and Johns Hopkins offer world-leading opportunities, while the United States’ liberal arts colleges provide a distinctive undergraduate experience built around close teaching, small classes and direct access to faculty.

In our latest insight, we look beyond reputation and rankings to explore how families can identify the universities that best suit a student’s academic interests, ambitions and preferred way of learning.

For many families, Harvard represents the pinnacle of higher education. Yet with an acceptance rate of just over 4%, outstanding grades alone are no longer enough to secure a place.

The reality is that the strongest applicants have often been building their profile for years through academic rigour, sustained extracurricular commitment, intellectual curiosity and a compelling personal narrative.

In our latest insight, we explore what Harvard itself says about admissions, why so many exceptional candidates are unsuccessful, and what students can do to strengthen their applications long before they submit them.

One of the more striking differences between UK and US university admissions is that, in the US, strong grades alone are rarely enough.

Admissions teams are not simply assessing academic performance; they are trying to understand the student behind the application. Intellectual curiosity, initiative, character, contribution to school life, and personal reflection all carry meaningful weight in the process.

For families accustomed to the relative clarity of the UK system, this can initially feel unfamiliar, even opaque. Yet it is also what makes the American approach so distinctive. The most compelling applications are often those that reveal a coherent and authentic story developed gradually over time.

In this insight, we explore what “holistic admissions” actually means, how the US process differs from UCAS, and what students should be thinking about long before applications are submitted.

For anyone considering US universities, we hope this offers some useful perspective.

With limited places and a rigorous assessment process across English, Maths, and reasoning, competition is intense, and the difference often lies in how well a child is prepared to think, not just what they know.

If you’re considering 7+ entry, our latest insight breaks down exactly what the school is looking for, and how to give your child the best possible start.
