The day one of my teachers said to me, with pride, "I can finally say it out loud. I'm a voice teacher," I got a lump in my throat.

Because I knew she had waited a long while to have the confidence to say that. The years of being a professional (and well-known) singer couldn't quieten the voice inside that kept insisting she wasn't ready, didn't know enough, didn't have the training.

Fortunately she decided to do something about it, and now she knows she is ready, capable and good enough.

That is what all of this is really about. The confidence to own who you can be, if you put the effort in.

If you've ever told yourself "I'll start teaching when I'm good enough," then this is for you.

I said the very same thing before I began teaching. And I've heard so many gifted singers say it too, year after year, waiting for a feeling of readiness that never turns up. Some of our students had been following us for four-five years before having the courage to say out loud they wanted to step into teaching.

I wish someone had told me sooner that being an accomplished singer and being a competent singing teacher are two completely separate skills. It would have saved me from giving a disastrous first singing lesson.

You could spend years perfecting your own voice and still feel lost the first time a student steps in front of you. Teaching is its own craft and its own knowledge, and the moment you have it, that nagging "Am I ready?" question finally dies out.

That knowledge is exactly what I'm going to cover in my free masterclass this Thursday.

We'll look at the questions to ask yourself before you take your first student, why talent alone doesn't make the teacher, and what truly does. You'll walk away clear on where you stand and what to do next.
