It was great to catch up with Fatima Whitbread at The Children's Homes Leaders Conference, discussing her UK campaign to improve the care system and ensure all children in care are ''seen, heard and valued''.

It was also great to discuss how we can work together to support the campaign and make a meaningful difference for children and young people in care.

We’re looking forward to continuing the conversation and supporting this important work.

Research shows that physical activity increases concentration, attention, and emotional regulation: all critical for learners with SEND. Movement breaks can be as short as 30 seconds or as long as 10+ minutes, but the impact on readiness to learn is significant.

What this may look like in practice
-Structured movement activities: Stretching, chair yoga, or wall push-ups to release tension.
-Fun, gamified breaks: Animal walks, dice games, and scavenger hunts that double as regulation tools.
-Flexible pacing: Breaks are timed around individual student needs, not rigid schedules.

Movement isn't a distraction from learning, it's a foundation for it. We encourage all our students to incorporate movement into their day as we know that when students feel regulated, they feel safe. When they feel safe, they can learn.

Yesterday, students learned about leadership role models, researched their own role model, and created a leadership showcase on their chosen leader.

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Areyauna Rais-Firouz

Meet Areyauna - our Principal of the National Online School.

With 20 years of experience in education and school leadership, Areyauna is passionate about making sure every child feels seen, supported, and stretched. She started her career as an English teacher and has since worked across mainstream, SEND, and alternative provision, holding senior and executive leadership roles along the way.

What drives her work:

Designing a curriculum that is ambitious and accessible for every learner.
Using technology to remove barriers, not create them.
Ensuring that even in an online space, no child feels like they are learning alone.

“Technology can change where and how we learn, but it’s connection that helps young people feel they belong, believe in themselves and thrive.”

As an Ofsted inspector, Areyauna brings a unique understanding of what great education looks like and she is dedicated to bringing that standard to the digital classroom. She believes that education should always recognise the individual: their strengths, their needs, and what helps them to thrive.
