I have put together a series of six tutorials which will take place at Lauderdale House in Highgate between January and March 2026. There sessions are designed for able and curious learners of mathematics to extend and enrich their learning experience beyond what the classroom can provide.

Topics such as infinite sets, paradoxes and others - that are not included in the curriculum - will be presented so that participants can conjecture, discuss and explore these topics with me guide them appropriately to keep them in a state of deep-thinking. I am convinced this offering is unique and would be of massive value to your keen mathematicians in school years 8 - 10.

Personally, I genuinely think this is a great way to give your child the edge when it comes to university interviews or just open problem-solving discussions in real life.

Why you should reach out to tutors directly, and skip the middleman:

There is comfort in a brand. Most of us would not buy a car from a name we were not familiar with. In many areas of life, people go with the low-risk option, even if it costs more, because it feels predictable.

Is private tuition any different?

Firstly, when you book through a tuition agency, you are likely paying a substantial commission so that a profit can be made by the middle man. The tuition agency then becomes an artificial barrier between the tutor and the tutee. It slows communication, making it more formal and less effective, and charges you for it!

Secondly, the barriers to entry into many tuition agencies are not as high as you think. I have had interviews which consisted of being asked what school I worked at, and that was it! I was then working for the agency who charged hefty sums for my tuition, and took approximately 50% as commission.

Good tuition is personal. Direct contact matters.

Bloom's 2 Sigma Problem:

In 1984, educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom found that students who received individualised tutoring performed two standard deviations better than those who received conventional classroom instruction. This means that the average tutored student outperformed 98% of the students in a traditional classroom setting.

Bloom's 2 Sigma Problem is widely accepted. The precise effect size may vary, but it is almost always significant. It is inevitable that a lot of valuable learning happens between the lines.

How to sit comfortably with unfamiliar problems.
How to explain your thinking clearly.
How to persevere when the method is not immediately apparent.

These are skills that can only develop with the right kind of challenge. The sort of questions that encourage exploration, not just repetition, but they are not always covered in a packed school timetable.
