In total, Tesla was awarded 112 patents in the United States. In addition, researchers have identified 199 other patents granted across 26 countries, with France (30), the UK (29), Belgium (27), Germany (21), Italy (19), and Austria (16) leading the way in numbers. In various other nations, his patent count ranged from 1 to 7. Cumulatively, Tesla is credited with securing at least 311 patents across 27 countries spanning five continents.
A closer examination of Tesla’s contributions reveals 116 original or "core" patents, with 109 issued in the U.S. and 7 in the U.K., representing 125 distinct inventions. The remaining 195 patents were either international variations or adaptations of these fundamental concepts. Among his most extensively protected inventions were his bladeless pump and turbine (US patents 1,061,142 and 1,061,206), which received protection in 22 countries, totaling 23 grants. Conversely, 54 of his key U.S. patents were not pursued internationally.
