✨ Little and Often: Why It Works

One of the most powerful things we can do for young learners - especially those finding phonics and spellings tricky - is to keep practice short, calm, and consistent. Little and often truly does build confidence.

My daughter is 5 and has been finding phonics and spellings a challenge. Today we were at her sister’s Irish dancing Feis, and in those tiny pockets of downtime - a few minutes here and there - we revisited her spellings together. No pressure, no big sit‑down session, just gentle practice woven into the day.

And the difference over the last few weeks has been huge. Her scores are climbing, but more importantly, so is her confidence. She’s starting to believe she can do it - and that belief is everything.

For any parent supporting early literacy at home: it doesn’t need to be perfect, or long, or formal. A few focused minutes, repeated regularly, can make learning feel lighter and far more achievable.

Little and often really does add up.

A multi sensory approach is key. It’s also vital that we have buy in, and games are a great way to relieve pressure whilst learning.
