Buxton is an all-through 3-16 school at the southern end of Waltham Forest; on the borders of Newham. We serve a diverse community and achieve high results for all groups of pupils from a variety of backgrounds, including approximately 60 % for whom English is an additional language. With results improving year on year we have been able to expand and now have 4 forms of entry in the primary phase

and six forms of entry from year 7 to 11. Pupils automatically transfer from year 6 to year 7, removing the tension of primary secondary transfer applications

We know that we can transform the learning of generations of children by having the full age range of children on one site, led by staff and supported by a community who share common values, learning and curriculum aims, policies and practices in an all-through school. We are fast becoming a leading edge learning community in the field of all-through education.

Esa in Year 10 represented Buxton School at the Speak Out Challenge this week, where he competed against 12 other students. He delivered a thought-provoking speech titled 'Fine Line' exploring inequalities created by Covid-19.

We are thrilled to announce that Esa secured the third-place position, a remarkable accomplishment that truly reflects his dedication and hard work.

Esa's success is a testament to the effort he put in perfecting his oracy skills and stage presence over the past week. Well done Esa.

Last week, Year 10 pupils were lucky to have a visitor from the British Cartographic Society to deliver a session on map skills in the context of the Japanese Tsunami. They were creating OS Maps through the lens of emergency relief and humanitarian organisations to direct emergency services.

They represented the school well, and one of our groups will attend a national competition to represent Buxton!

Today, many of our children and staff wore blue and donated money to our fundraiser for MNDA - Motor Neurone Disease Association - in honour of Wendy.

As many of you may know, Wendy was an integral member of the Buxton community and positively impacted countless children and staff members throughout her time here. She was known for her kind and caring nature, dedication to her work, and infectious smile.

We hope that the money raised today will help people suffering from MND and support the vital research being done to reduce the risks of the disease.

World Maths day is celebrated on 23rd March across many schools and countries. We participated in the celebration by completing fun activities using our multiplication knowledge.

We had a KS2 Times Tables challenge and would like to congratulate the following classes.

First place: 4K with 259 points – You will get your special cupcakes on Friday!

Second place: 3A with 231 points – Miss Ashe will take you on a special Easter Egg hunt!

Third place: 3S with 117 points – Miss Smith will give you some extra play this week!

During play, we also solved multiplication problems and had time to practice our Times Tables on the playground.

REMINDER:
Tomorrow - Thursday 30th March - we will be holding a ‘Dress in Blue’ day at Buxton School in memory of our dear friend and colleague Wendy, who worked at Buxton for over 25 years. We ask that children wear something blue on this day, Wendy’s favourite colour, in memory of her.

As many of you may know, Wendy was an integral member of the Buxton community and positively impacted countless children and staff members throughout her time here. She was known for her kind and caring nature, dedication to her work, and infectious smile.

We want to take this opportunity to celebrate Wendy's life and her impact on our school. By wearing blue on Thursday, we hope to honour her memory and show our appreciation for everything she did for us.

We kindly ask that children donate to the Motor Neurone Disease Association, a cause which was close to Wendy's heart, as we look to raise as much money as possible. Your generosity can help make a difference in the lives of those affected by this devastating disease.

Thank you for your support, and we look forward to coming together as a community to remember and celebrate Wendy's life.

Recently, Dulwich Physics Partners delivered a workshop to our Y11 Triple Science students on half-life and radioactivity. Our pupils demonstrated excellent participation and gained confidence in this really tricky physics content. This workshop allowed pupils to develop analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Dulwich College were so impressed by our students and commented, 'The year 11s were focussed, responsive and really pushed themselves to problem solve the half-life equations; it was an absolute pleasure!'

On Friday, we celebrated Red Nose Day in aid of Comic Relief. We aimed to raise funds to support people in poverty in the UK and worldwide.

As part of our fundraising efforts, the Primary Phase chose the theme ‘Be A Hero for The Day’, where children and staff came to school dressed as superheroes! In our secondary phase, students wore an item of red clothing.

Together, we raised over £470 for the charity!

Last week was very busy as Buxton celebrated National Career Week. Many speakers discussed their careers, including a police officer with the London Met, a chief nurse and a BBC apprentice journalist. We also had students in Years 9 and 10 out on trips to attend special career events, including workshops exploring careers in Engineering, Fashion and Radio. Finally, we have had staff in from HSBC delivering workshops to Year 7 exploring the banking world.
