At Laurel Park, we are committed to helping our students become articulate, confident writers. We take great pride in celebrating their creativity by encouraging participation in national competitions and literary showcases.

We are thrilled to share this original piece by Mary (Year 11), which she has submitted to the Young Poets Competition. We wish Mary the very best of luck with her entry—please enjoy her evocative work below.

On Monday 27th April, thirty of our Year 9 to Year 11 students enjoyed a fantastic trip to the majestic Old Vic Theatre at Waterloo to watch a beautifully poignant new production of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". Accompanied by Miss Haddon, Miss Guidolin, and Miss O'Flaherty, the students impressively navigated a train strike, central London rush hour, and even a severe nosebleed to arrive at their Baylis Circle seats just in the nick of time.

The group watched in absolute awe as this powerful, passionately performed play told its tragic story set in a men's psychiatric ward. Although the show was completely sold out, our school's Drama Club partnership with The Old Vic meant we were incredibly fortunate to be given free tickets for this unforgettable experience.

Last week, our Year 9 and Year 10 students took part in an exciting and highly educational Geography field trip to Arnos Park. The students had a fantastic time exploring the real-life settings of rivers, erosion, and flood protection right in our local area. During the visit, they closely studied the Pymmes Brook, observing signs of erosion like worn-away riverbanks and discussing how moving water gradually reshapes the land around us.

The students also investigated how the river is actively managed to reduce the risk of flooding, identifying important protection methods such as reinforced banks and managed channels. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to record observations of the surrounding environment and apply everything they have been learning in the classroom to the real world.

We are absolutely thrilled to look ahead and welcome Talia to our new Year 7 cohort this coming September. Talia is already a superb ice-skater who competes at a national level, and she recently achieved an incredibly impressive 6th place finish out of 21 competitors.

We are so proud to have such dedicated and talented students joining our school community. We very much look forward to supporting Talia and celebrating her continued ice-skating achievements throughout her entire school journey with us.

We would love to celebrate more of our new Year 7 (starting in Sept 2026) students achievements, just drop us an email and let us know what they have been doing.

Our Year 12 Construction students have been truly excelling in their latest practical coursework, producing incredibly high-quality work in their Painting and Decorating unit. They have been taken through a full, industry-style process, beginning with detailed planning and formal requisition procedures to ensure they selected the correct materials and equipment, just as they would in a real construction environment.

Moving into the practical phase, our workshop has been transformed into a highly productive workspace. The students have demonstrated fantastic technical ability, from applying even coats of paint to mastering the very challenging task of hanging matching patterned wallpaper with absolute precision. Their positive attitude, professional approach, and exceptional teamwork have earned them well-deserved praise from both our Headteacher and visiting staff. We are so proud of the strong example they are setting for future cohorts and the clear potential they are showing for success in the construction industry.

On 23rd April we were delighted to welcome a small group of our new Year 7 students for "A Morning at Laurel Park," a calm and purposeful transition event designed to support them as they begin their journey into secondary school. Led by our Evergreen team and Mrs Tansley, the morning started in our Star Room with a therapeutic art session titled "Emotions as Landscapes," giving the students a creative and supportive space to express how they are feeling about the big move and to help build confidence.

The group then headed outside to our school allotment for some hands-on activities, which included making apple bird feeders, planting peas, and helping to prepare our raised beds. The combination of creativity, fresh air, and practical activity created a wonderfully relaxed and positive atmosphere. We are very much looking forward to welcoming them back again soon, and a special thank you goes out to our fantastic student leaders for the event: Lucia, Sotiris, Aristo, and Niko.
