🧠 Want your child to actually remember what they revise? Here’s how.

When it comes to 11+ prep, longer doesn’t always mean better. In fact, short, focused sessions using the right strategies can do far more for your child’s progress than hours of passive reading.

Here are some tried-and-tested techniques to help revision stick — especially when motivation is low or the content feels overwhelming:

✅ Active recall – Instead of re-reading notes, get your child to answer questions from memory. You can use flashcards, past paper questions, or even make up your own. This strengthens long-term memory and builds confidence.

✅ Teach back – One of the most effective (and underrated) methods! Ask your child to explain a topic to you, in their own words. If they can teach it clearly, they’ve understood it. If not, that’s a sign to revisit it — without pressure.

✅ Use short bursts – Aim for 20–30 minutes of focused effort, followed by a short break. It’s easier to stay consistent this way, and it avoids burnout — especially over the summer holidays.

📌 Remember: What works for one child might not work for another. Try different techniques and see what your child responds to best. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s progress.

📚 Building the Right Foundations for the 11+

If your child is preparing for the 11+, two skill areas can make a huge impact on their confidence and performance: Number Skills and Understanding Questions.

✨ Number Skills go beyond simply adding and subtracting.
We want children to feel confident doing quick mental calculations, following multi-step problems, and understanding how to work with fractions, decimals, and percentages—all of which feature heavily in 11+ papers.

🔍 Understanding Questions is just as important.
So many children know how to "do the maths," but struggle when it's hidden inside a word problem or a tricky graph. Being able to translate words into numbers, interpret what a question is really asking, and work with graphs and charts is a skill that takes time and practice—but it's so worth it.

At Ucademy, we support students in building these core skills step by step, and in a way that actually sticks.

Preparing for the 11+ can feel overwhelming, but a structured approach sets your child up for success. Here’s how to get started:

1️⃣ Set a Timeline

🗓️ 18-12 months: Build strong English, Maths, Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning skills.
🗓️ 12-6 months: Introduce timed practice and exam techniques.
🗓️ 6-3 months: Practice full-length past papers under timed conditions.
🗓️ Final weeks: Focus on weak areas and build confidence.

2️⃣ Get Familiar with 11+ Questions

✏️ English: Comprehension, grammar, vocabulary
🧮 Maths: Problem-solving, arithmetic, word problems
🧩 Verbal Reasoning: Codebreaking, word patterns, logic
🔲 Non-Verbal Reasoning: Shapes, sequences, spatial awareness

3️⃣ Assess Readiness

✅ Take a baseline test
✅ Identify weaker subjects
✅ Track progress with mini-assessments

Start early, stay consistent, and your child will be ready to tackle the 11+ with confidence! 💡📖
