Some amazing feedback from our performance & recording with dads in prison earlier this week - starting a new phase of our collaboration with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra supported by Arts Council England

“I do believe you will have changed their lives for the better. Reflection on what they are missing will help them stop making the same mistakes again,” Head of Reducing Reoffending

Feedback from the dads included: “Thanks for the opportunity to do this for my kids. It means a lot to me and them.” / “I’m ever so grateful for the time and effort you have all put in to make this song so special…”/ “… not like me to be speechless…”/ “… a once in a lifetime opportunity…”

Originally devised by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute in the US, the Lullaby Project invites participants to work with professional musicians to write a personal lullaby for their children. The aim of the project is to strengthen the bond between parent and child through a creative arts activity. The project can also be a way for parents to explore and express their emotions in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

The Irene Taylor Trust initially became involved in the Lullaby Project through commissions by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which included co-delivering the Lullaby Project in Chicago; seeing the impact of the project, ITT partnered with the RPO to bring the project to the UK for a London pilot in 2017 working with dads in prison and migrant and refugee mothers, which then lead to delivery across several regions from 2020-2022. This new phase will run over the next two years, in both prison & community settings.

This week prison music charities are getting together to put on music events in prisons up and down the country. Our friends Beating Time, Sing Inside, Changing Tunes, Finding Rhythms and The Prison Choir Project will be showcasing the huge variety and quality of music being made in our prisons.

For us, this week has seen the start of a new in collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, performing and recording songs written with dads in prison for their children, and of course our amazing prison Musicians in Residence have been delivering their usual sessions.

Today we’re in prison with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing and recording lullabies written with dads for their children, kicking off a new phase of our collaboration supported by Arts Council England - so it seems a good time to re-share a clip of this beautiful performance by the BBC Singers of a previous lullaby ‘Daddy’s Little Man’ arranged by Nick Hayes.

This recording was made in 2020 during lockdown as part of the ‘Proms at Home’ series, for a special edition looking at the Lullaby Project. Our thanks to the BBC Proms for permission to share. ‘Daddy’s Little Man’ was co-written with a dad in prison for his young son. ITT musician Nick Hayes, who orchestrates all the lullabies for the RPO ensembles, created this special choral arrangement specially for Proms At Home. The BBC Singers did a fabulous job recording themselves remotely for this film, made during the difficult lockdown restrictions.

We love being a Resident at Rich Mix London, with many inspirational neighbours sharing the building - they have some spaces if your organisation needs a new home 👇

As we approach the new year, we’re thinking back on all the great events our residents have put on in our building this year. It’s so great to have members of our creative community share our spaces and to host their events as part of our live programme 🫶

If you’re interested in becoming part of our creative community and calling Rich Mix home, we have a few workspaces currently available to rent.

This week we’re celebrating 28 years of the Irene Taylor Trust! We’ll be looking back on some highlights from over the years… In 2012 was delighted to be included in a unique programme as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad; PRS Foundation's New Music 20x12 consisted of twenty new pieces of music, each 12 minutes in length, celebrating the talent and imagination of the UK's musical community.

We were honoured to be selected to take part in such a prestigious project, enabling men in prison to contribute their voices to this national event, creating a piece titled ‘Beyond This’ in collaboration with contemporary composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and ITT musicians Nick Hayes, Charles Stuart and Sara Lee. In total, 15 men in prison and 4 members of prison staff contributed to the creation and performance of the piece.

In order to bring ‘Beyond This’ to the outside world, we brought on board artist Lizzie Coombes and film-maker Andy Wood to create this beautiful accompanying film.

This week we’re celebrating 28 years of the Irene Taylor Trust ! We’ll be looking back on some highlights from over the years…

Of course, it all began with our work in prisons. Here John tells us how was “my connection to the outside world and inner self” and how it “fostered him through those bad times” as he worked through the mix of emotions while serving his sentence, helping him to build confidence and move towards the future beyond prison. We continued to support John after his release through our programme.

John also performs his original song ‘Take Me to the Place’, backed by ITT’s fabulous musicians.
