Ahead of Amateur Movie Day 2026, why not reindoctrinate yourself with our 2023 series on Advanced Amateurism: Clumsy Loving in the Age of Competent Content.

A 12-part program containing 45 micro-essays and nine exercises on the subject of amateurism as a technique in filmmaking, art, and life.

https://www.unfound.video/p/advanced-amateury

"It’s a slick century. Everybody’s producing ‘content.’ Pros and amateurs fetishise clean edges and stock affectations. The language of authenticity has been shrink-wrapped, digitised, and delivered by 3D fax machine.

Amateurism is often defined as a lack of professionalism. But even the non-professional defaults to professionalised tendencies. Amateurism may be defined by its lack of infrastructure. But way out beyond the movie industry, the artist-filmmaker is tempted to toil towards the freshly-showered images of Hollywood and Indiewood.

Couldn’t we reveal more by channelling our inner sh*tness? Aren’t we wasting valuable energy trying to cover up the cracks in our reality? The misalignments in our imagination?

To be crap requires the power to resist. In these conditions, it takes courage to allow your ineptitude to show. But might the filmmaker go further and cultivate a practice of worse-ness? Embrace the messy principles of love and humility over profit (of whatever kind) and vanity?

Not to fake it/slum it. But to advance (or perhaps settle in to) a working appreciation of all that is:

vulnerable

naive

inept

broken

broke

poor

wrong

inconsistent

incoherent, and

bad taste

about your practice, your crew, your resources, and your environment.

What tools are available to the sincere amateur-filmmaker? Or more precisely, how can this figure make a tool of anything and everything? What techniques are available for drawing out the messy business of love, tenderness, and symbiosis in filmmaking?"

Are you familiar with the sound of chairs scraping on the hard floor of a cold room on a Tuesday evening? Then I think you will totally get today’s lesson. It’s about the frozen time-outside-of-time of the extracurricular activity space, and how:

🎻 The opening of a film establishes its pitch and tension - just like an orchestral tune-up.

💭 But if the orchestral conductor or the filmmaker chooses to sustain that preparatory note forever, their work may leave linear time and form, instead, a bubble of time.

🎭 Belgian filmmaker Boris Lehman reinforced his film’s “bubble time” by nesting an absurdist bubble play within an absurdist documentary.

🎥 Lehman’s plot, prop, setting, music, framing, and editing choices all contribute to the pleasant, if disconcerting, non-time of his movie.

Richard Linklater is the most prominent pursuer of the "metabolist epic" genre.

But what should he do if his actors - and his planet - fail to endure to the movie's completion?

More on the four different ways the technique of temporal expressionism may function in your movie:

😷 Sick time as a single character’s affliction (“Solipsistic”).

🧬 Exotic time as just the way time is in this movie (“Architectural”).

🌪️ Occasional time phenomena as an irregular fact of life or Act of God in your hero’s neighbourhood (“Meteorological”).

📼 Over-emotional time seepages as a contamination between the characters, their fictional universe, and the filmmaker’s tools and materials (“Mediaphysical”).

Out now! UPV TIME05 Sidechaining inner time-worlds

Read more & subscribe: https://www.unfound.video/p/time05-sidechaining-inner-time-worlds

💡 The filmmaker may express inner time worlds in an intuitive or more measured manner.

🌡️ When opting to extrapolate inner time worlds in a more measured manner, she may use a technique called “sidechaining.”

🔌 Sidechaining involves adjusting the behaviour of time in your movie directly in proportion to another variable, such as hero angst or yellow.

🍝 But if you sidechain more than one variable element, you could get yourself in a time-tangle!

🍰 Your movie is made up of slices - visual, narrative, and temporal slices.

🧇 This cross-section look at your hero’s world reveals patterns we miss in our daily lives

👩‍🍳 Movies are not real life, so messing with the recipe of this ‘marble cake’ structure can cook up curious new cinematic possibilities.

🔪 The filmmaker lets her hero see the cake slice at her own risk.
