I wonder if this is anything new?
I took evening classes during my first degree because the course involved learning a language ab initio, and I wanted to consolidate the basics.
And I sought help from the statisticians in the maths department, when I took my MBA in Educational Leadership.
Both times, I felt a bit miffed about the university not offering better teaching, but I still had an issue that I needed to solve … I suspect it’s the same for these students.
Within weeks of starting an undergraduate degree at the London School of Economics, Ben** had rehired the tutoring firm that had helped him through his A-levels.
It was an expensive decision for a fresher who was already contending with high rent and tuition fees. Nonetheless, he paid £80-£90 an hour for help with everything from maths to essay-writing skills.
Ben is one of a growing number of undergraduates paying for private lessons. Students say they are paying for tutoring because they became accustomed to having help for their GCSEs and A-levels and appreciate the additional moral and practical support.
