The Power of Reading to Your Child: A Simple Habit with a Lifelong Impact
Four months ago, The Guardian reported a worrying decline in children reading for pleasure—only 35% of children aged 8-18 now enjoy books, a 9% drop from last year. With screens and distractions constantly vying for their attention, it’s no wonder.
But here’s the good news: we can make a change. Over the next 7 days, we’ll explore why the small habit of reading aloud to your child can make such a big difference in their lives.
Reading to your child is about so much more than literacy. It helps shape their brain, boosts their confidence, and strengthens your bond. Beyond that, reading creates invaluable moments of connection. Asking questions like, “What do you think will happen next?” or “How would you feel in this situation?” helps children make sense of the world around them and develop their emotional intelligence.
So, if you haven’t already—start today. Pick up a book, read aloud, and make it fun!
Here at SisuBloom Children’s Book Club, we’re dedicated to helping children build a love of reading while developing life skills that last a lifetime. Currently, our ages 6-10 group are reading Malala: My Story of Standing Up for Girls' Rights by Malala Yousafzai.
Interested in joining our reading club? Whether you're a parent, guardian, or educator, we’d love for you to be a part of our community. Together, we’ll inspire the next generation—one story at a time.
