Seeing behaviour through a trauma and attachment lens is key to understanding a child, and responding in the right way. This is the most effective way to both neet need AND ensure calmer school environments

Trauma-Informed | A poem by Ton Mazzone A poem I wrote, voice recorded and edited on what a trauma-informed society looks to me. Why is this so important? Because I recognise that every individual'...
This always chokes me up; the emotion, the hug, the way Mr Pigden speaks to him in such a warm way.
But look what Ian says about his relationship and why it worked:
“I used to collect the registers from the teachers,' Ian recalled. 'Then they made me milk monitor. I really liked that. It was really good. **I just felt important.**
Then what he'd do, he'd put me back into the classroom, and then my writing got better. He wouldn't let me play football if he'd heard I'd been naughty in class. **He just gave me a sense of feeling like I had some use.**”
Trauma-informed practice, relational practice, at its best. Ian felt heard, he felt good enough, he felt important to someone; but there were boundaries and consistency of approach (including appropriate child-centred rules)

It’s simplistic to state “Seven Words” will change a child’s life, as we all know how much more complex it us than that.
However, the impact of consistently hearing *and feeling* words like this - that make learners feel valued, welcome, and liked by educators - goes a long way to starting to change a life.

This is so true
In our opinion, something like this should be written on the front page of every school behaviour policy…
There is no place for shame in our schools. It doesn’t make anything better.
There *is* a place for meeting psychological, physiological, learning and sensory needs.
There *is* a place for feeling safe, accepted, and ‘good enough’ as you are.
There *is* a place for belonging.

I was sat on the bus today and overheard a conversation which reminded me just how much our kids went through in the pandemic.
He was telling his mum “remember, we couldn’t go out, and you had to seal everything up to stop germs getting in. Remember, cos everyone was dying”. His mum did a great job of reassuring him, but he still wanted to talk about it. You could hear him trying to process his trauma.
A whole generation will be affected by something so huge, and it’s crucial we remember that. It was a timely reminder for me.

People don’t talk about this stuff enough.
Where are you on this scale? Anything other than green then talk to someone. Talk to a person who cares about you and who ‘gets’ you. Talk to someone at work or at a place you go regularly. Talk to your GP or a counselling service. Talk to me!
Or a combination of the above.
But please, just talk. 🗣️ See if you can make a plan to start moving back down the scale.
It’s okay not to be okay.
It’s okay to ask for help.
It’s going to be okay.
Oh, and if someone talks to you, listen 👂

This is a really powerful image and message from an autistic child about her experience in school.
Our goal is to partner with schools to develop inclusive environments, tailored behaviour policies, and effective classroom strategies that support neurodivergent learners. We offer a range of services, including staff CPD, environmental audits, 1:1 coaching for teams, and assistance with EHCP reviews. We work in a neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-responsive way with all the voices around a child - but most importantly enhancing their own - to develop bespoke ‘pupil passports’ to ensure clear, effective, and individualised support for each child.
If we can’t provide exactly what a school needs, we have a strong network of specialists to connect them with. By working collaboratively and drawing on our collective expertise, we can ensure that every SEND learner receives the support they deserve.
