Stop Trying to Figure PT Out Alone

In this weeks episode of the Successful PT: UK edition Dani interviews Jewade Graham who shares why trying to “figure it out” on your own is slowing you down…

And I see this ALL the time with PTs.

You’re on the gym floor, trying different things, hoping something works.

Watching bits of content.
Trying random strategies.
Second guessing yourself constantly.

But here’s the truth…

That trial and error phase? It takes YEARS if you do it alone.

The PTs who actually succeed quicker don’t just rely on themselves.

They learn from people who’ve already built what they’re trying to build.

And this part is important…

If you’re an in-person PT, learn from someone who’s actually DONE it on the gym floor.

Not just someone who’s only ever built an online business.

Because they’re completely different skill sets.

Think about it like this - in any other job, you’d be surrounded by people ahead of you.

You’d learn from them daily.

In PT… you have to create that environment yourself.

And yes, that usually means investing in it.

But that’s how you speed things up.

So ask yourself:

Are you trying to figure it out alone…
Or are you learning from someone who’s already where you want to be?

Your Environment Is Killing Your Progress as a PT

In this weeks episode of the Successful PT: UK edition Dani interviews Jewade Graham who talks about how he fast tracked his growth in the industry…

And honestly, this is something I see SO many PTs getting wrong.

You’re trying to figure everything out on your own.

You’re watching random bits of content, picking up tips here and there, but you’re not actually in an environment that pushes you to get better.

And that’s the difference.

Because when you surround yourself with PTs who are better than you…

You start thinking differently.
You solve problems quicker.
You build confidence faster.

It’s not about another qualification.

It’s about being in the right rooms.

When I look at PTs who grow quickly vs those who stay stuck…

It’s rarely knowledge.

It’s who they’re around day to day.

So ask yourself:

Are you surrounded by people who challenge you…
Or people who keep you comfortable?

Because that will dictate how far you go in this industry.

Stop Blaming Leads — You Don’t Know How to Sell

In this weeks episode of the Successful PT: UK edition Dani interviews Andy Heath who built a six-figure PT business and now mentors coaches to do the same.

Here’s the truth most PTs don’t want to hear…

It’s not your leads.

It’s not the gym.

It’s not the algorithm.

It’s that you don’t know how to sell.

And before you switch off — selling isn’t being pushy or sleazy.

It’s being able to:
• Start a real conversation
• Understand what the client actually wants
• Guide them to a decision

Most PTs skip all of that.

They rely on “free tasters”…
Hope people will just sign up…
Or panic when it comes to talking about price.

That’s why they stay stuck.

You can be the fittest, most knowledgeable coach in the gym…

But if you can’t confidently take someone from “interested” to “committed” — you won’t grow.

Simple as that.

Focus less on chasing more leads…

And more on getting better with the ones already in front of you.

Empathy Is Your Most Underrated Coaching Skill

Most coaches think results come from better programming.

They don’t.

They come from understanding the person in front of you.

If your client feels like you get them — their struggles, their lifestyle, their headspace — everything changes.

Adherence goes up.
Trust goes up.
Results follow.

But if there’s a disconnect?

Doesn’t matter how good your plan is… they won’t stick to it.

Empathy isn’t being “soft” either.

It’s knowing when to push and when to pull back — based on their reality, not yours.

That’s what builds real coach-client relationships.

This came up in a chat with Tyler and it’s a good reminder — connection always comes before coaching.

Stop Setting Vague Fitness Goals

“Lose weight” isn’t a goal. It’s a wish.

If your client can’t tell you how much, by when, and what exactly they’re focusing on… they’re going to spin their wheels.

And if we’re honest — that’s on us as coaches.

Every goal needs 3 things:

A clear outcome (e.g. lose 6kg, not “tone up”)
A deadline (give it urgency)
A focus (what actually matters right now)

From there, you build process goals (steps, sessions, calories) and performance goals (strength targets, reps, etc).

No clarity = no direction.
No direction = no progress.

Simple.

This came up in a conversation with Tyler and it’s a good reminder — goal setting only works if it’s done properly.

Your Clients Need Less Instruction, More Autonomy

Your Clients Need Less Instruction, More Autonomy… In this weeks episode of the Successful PT: UK edition Dani interviews Tyler Edwards who talks about one of the biggest issues in our industry: how we communicate with clients.

Most PTs think they need to lead every second of a session.

Constant cues. Constant corrections. Constant direction.
But here’s the problem…

The more directive you are, the more dependent your client becomes.

And dependent clients?
They struggle when you’re not there.

If your client can only execute the plan with you, they don’t really own it.

What Tyler highlights is simple but powerful:
We’re often over-instructing and under-coaching.

Good coaching isn’t about control.
It’s about giving clients the tools, confidence, and space to make decisions themselves.

That might look like:
Asking more questions instead of giving answers
Letting them problem-solve mid-session
Giving them options instead of one “perfect” way

Because long-term results don’t come from perfect sessions…
They come from clients who can think, adapt, and take ownership without you.

That’s the shift more PTs need to make.

Clients Decide This in the First 30 Seconds

In this weeks episode of the Successful PT: UK edition Dani interviews Cherelle Mitchell who shares what actually makes someone stay in a gym… or never come back.

And it’s not programming.

It’s not equipment.
It’s how you make them feel the moment they walk in.

That first interaction?
That first “hello”?
That first conversation?

That’s where clients decide if they’re comfortable… or already thinking about leaving.

You can be the most knowledgeable coach in the room — but if a client doesn’t feel welcomed, safe, or connected… they won’t stick around.

Simple things that actually matter:
A genuine, friendly welcome
Remembering names
Creating a relaxed, positive vibe
Making people feel like they belong

Retention isn’t built in the session.
It’s built in the experience.

So ask yourself —
If someone walked into your gym today… would they feel like they want to stay? 💭

PTs: Shout About Your Qualifications

In this weeks episode of the Successful PT: UK edition Dani interviews Cherelle Mitchell who talks about why PTs need to start being louder about their qualifications and professional status.

Because let’s be real…

There are a LOT of people in this industry calling themselves “coaches” —
Online, in gyms, on Instagram —
And not all of them are actually qualified.

Which is exactly why this matters.
If you are qualified…
If you have invested in your education…
If you do meet professional standards…

You need to show it.

This is where CIMSPA plays such an important role.

They exist to:
Set industry standards
Ensure client safety
Approve qualifications
Raise the level of professionalism across the sector

So when you align with that — it’s not just a badge.
It’s proof that you’re credible, safe, and operating at a high standard.

But if you don’t communicate that… your clients won’t know the difference.

Post your certificates.
Talk about your learning.
Show your professional status.

Because in an industry full of noise…
credibility is what makes you stand out. 💭

The Difference Between a PT and a Professional

In this week’s episode of the Successful PT: UK edition Dani interviews Cherelle Mitchell who breaks down what it actually means to be a professional personal trainer.

And honestly… it’s not just about writing good programs or getting results.

It comes down to duty of care.

Are you operating at a high standard?
Are your clients actually safe in your sessions?
Are you confident that what you’re doing is correct — not just “what you’ve seen online”?

That’s the real shift from being a PT to being a professional.
This is why organisations like CIMSPA matter so much in our industry.

They’re not just “another box to tick” — they set the standard for:
Client safety
Quality coaching
Ongoing development
Professional credibility

And whether you realise it or not… your clients are trusting you with their health every single session.

So the question is —
Are you just delivering workouts… or are you holding yourself to a professional standard? 💭

Coach in a Way That Matches Your Strengths

One of the biggest mistakes I see PTs make is trying to coach how they think they should coach.

Weekly calls they secretly dread.
Constant check-ins that drain them.
Forcing themselves into a mould that just doesn’t fit.

Ella made such a good point here: great results start with self-awareness.

If you’re an introvert who hates calls, why are you building a coaching model around them?

If you’re brilliant at writing, voice notes, or long-form feedback — lean into that.

Clients don’t need you to copy someone else’s style.
They need the best version of you.

There isn’t one correct way to be a successful PT.
There’s only the way that plays to your strengths, your preferences, and what you genuinely enjoy.

When you coach in a way that feels natural:
• You show up better
• You last longer in the industry
• Your clients get a better experience

Your niche isn’t just who you help.

It’s how you help them.

And that’s where the magic actually happens.
