Another brilliant book we recommend in some of our Sustainability courses is ‘Building Revolutions: Applying the circular economy to the built environment’ by David Cheshire.

It is predicted that by 2030, 3 billion people who are currently living in poverty will have a middle class level of consumption. This will create a surge in the demand for natural resources by at least a third.

The book explores the benefits of circular economy in great depth - looking at ways we can reuse or salvage buildings, and materials, to extend their life. It has brilliant suggestions for applying new business models to reduce capital and lifecycle costs, providing a positive, sustainable legacy for future generations.

‘Building Revolutions’ is concise, well-illustrated and easy-to-understand, and serves as a brilliant, informative introduction to the circular economy approach, that should be gaining far more attention and inspiring much more focus within the industry.

Available from a world of booksellers.

Have you read it? We’d love to know what you think.

Imagine a world where our spaces are not just aesthetically pleasing, but also promote overall wellbeing! In the built environment, Wellbeing is generally overlooked, even though it is one of the most important topics in sustainable building.

Wellbeing in Interiors, is the perfect tool for interior designers, architects and other project professionals to help understand specific decisions around sustainable design and how materials and building services can be selected and implemented on a day-to-day basis.

Understanding the impacts on occupants’ wellbeing is important and part of the clarity sought on what works and what doesn’t in an existing or proposed space. As designers, getting to know who the design is catering for is half the equation towards achieving a design that supports wellbeing.

A user profile directs the way a project is briefed and how a design is informed, placing the users at the centre.

We love hearing good reviews about the Design for Wellbeing course!

“Interior Design for Wellbeing course... Absolutely fab! ... I attended the Interior design for wellbeing course a couple of years ago and it was a really great eye opener in terms of how to get to the core of what the client’s need and about the processes to go through to get a really good understanding of their persona and journey in order to produce the best design for their space. I would highly recommend to any architect, designer or construction professional out there. Design is about people and we really need to dig deeper to produce the best human-centered design we possibly can. This course will no doubt provide you with the tools to do this.”

As designers, we may sometimes get lost in the beauty and aesthetics of interior spaces. While these elements are important in shaping how we feel in a space, they should not be the primary goal of our work.

Good design supports occupant wellbeing and reflects the real values that define a fulfilling life. We can make better choices in how we use our built environments and how we live within interior spaces.

Designing for Wellbeing goes beyond aesthetics — it considers factors such as noise and stimulation, privacy versus openness, and the degree of access to nature.

If you want to bring more purpose to your designs but don’t know where to start, we’re here to help. Join the free preview of our course today!

Our team at has been involved in leading the development of the new Social & Wellbeing benchmarking and assessment scheme for SKArating. We’re excited to be part of this important work and would like to invite you to get involved too!

SKArating helps landlords and tenants assess their interior fit-out and refurbishment projects against environmental good practice criteria as part of wider sustainability goals.
