Which cognitive development benefits are enhanced by learning a language at a young age?

Day 5/5

🔹 Sharper cognitive skills

Research suggests that bilingual individuals have better cognitive control, which includes skills such as attention, inhibition, and task-switching. Early language learners develop these cognitive control abilities, leading to improved focus, decision-making, and overall cognitive functioning.

👉 If you could choose any second language for your child to learn, which one would it be and why?

Day 4/5

Enhanced multitasking abilities.

Switching between multiple languages trains the brain to navigate different linguistic systems efficiently. This practice in multitasking can enhance a child’s ability to focus, concentrate, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously—valuable skills in today’s fast-paced world.

Can you think of moments when your child showed impressive multitasking skills? What were they doing?

Day 3/5

Increased Creativity

When children learn a new language, they are exposed to different ways of expressing ideas and concepts, including culturally diverse approaches. This exposure can spark creativity and imagination as they learn to think outside the box and communicate in innovative ways. Bilingual or multilingual children often demonstrate enhanced creativity in problem-solving and storytelling.

Can you think of a time when your child surprised you with a creative story or solution to a problem?

BONUS QUESTION!

Day 2/5

Improved memory

Language learning requires memorisation of vocabulary, grammar rules, and sentence structures. At a young age, we do not focus so much on these last two things; however, this constant exercise in memory retention can strengthen a child's overall memory capacity, leading to better recall and retention of information in other areas of life, for example, in other school subjects.

How do you support your child’s memory development at home? Have you tried any fun memory-boosting activities?

Which cognitive development benefits are enhanced by language learning at a young age?

Over the next 5 days, we will share 5 insights about the benefits of children learning Spanish.

Day 1/5

Enhanced problem-solving skills

Learning a new language involves deciphering and understanding complex linguistic structures, which can improve a child's analytical and problem-solving abilities. It challenges their brains to think critically and find solutions to linguistic puzzles, thereby enhancing their cognitive skills.
