🌞 Try our sunlight and shadows experiment, a simple activity you can do with your child at home to teach them about the movement of the sun.

You will need:
A piece of white paper or card
Small household objects (e.g. toys, forks, leaves, action figures)
A pencil or crayons
A sunny windowsill, garden or balcony
Optional: masking tape to hold things in place

👣 Instructions:
1. Place the paper on a flat surface in direct sunlight.
2. Put one or more small objects, such as a cup or salt pot, standing upright on the paper to cast a shadow.
3. Use a pencil or crayon to trace around the shadow on the paper.
4. Come back every hour and trace the new shadow — notice how it moves and changes shape!

Which shadows were the longest? Which were the shortest? What time of day was the sun highest?

By doing this simple shadow experiment with your child, you can explore how the sun moves across the sky and how it affects the shape and direction of shadows. Together, you'll observe how shadows grow longer or shorter depending on the time of day, helping your child understand the relationship between sunlight and shadow.

🌞 Happy Summer Solstice! ☀️

Earlier marks the longest day of the year, as we celebrated the arrival of summer with the Summer Solstice.

Did you know that while nations in the Northern Hemisphere like the UK celebrate the Summer Solstice in June, those in the Southern Hemisphere such as Australia celebrate the event in December?

This is due to the Earth being on a tilt of 23.5 degrees as it rotates around the sun. The Sun travels the longest path through the sky on the day of the Summer Solstice.
