✨📚 September is right around the corner! 📚✨

Back to school can be tough after the holidays! Here are our top 5 tips to ease your child (and you!) back into the learning groove during the last week of August:

1. Establish a routine early- Set consistent bedtimes 3-4 days before the return to school.

2. Plan for the weeks ahead- Use a planner to map out upcoming events/scheduling for curricular and extra curricular activities.

3. Hydrate and eat nutritionally balanced meals/snacks- Avoid sugar crashes by snacking on fruit/nuts. At school, children may go longer between snack times mimicking this timetable for a few days prior may allow for a smoother transition.

4. Refresh the work/play space- A reorganise can help create an inviting environment boosting focus and motivation. Adding in some new stationary because who doesn’t love a fresh set of pens/notepads!?

5. Set small achievable goals- Ease into learning by setting mini tasks for each day, avoiding overwhelm. Reading and timetables are low maintenance ways to ease in, but an artistic task can also be a great way to work to a brief.

Why did I trick the children in my small group session?

To teach them that different shaped containers hold water differently!

You could try this idea at home just by measuring 100ml of water and pouring it into different shaped containers. Let me know if your child believed you when you told them that all the containers held the same amount of water.

The answer is simple… because children thrive on praise, recognition and a genuine sense of achievement.

At school, children are given hundreds of instructions every day. Research suggests they can hear well over 300 instructions during a typical school day. They work incredibly hard following routines, meeting expectations and doing what’s asked of them.

Then, they come to us….and give 110%!

So, we celebrate what they can do. Every small win matters. Every breakthrough is recognised. Every achievement deserves to be seen.

Our Hall of Fame is THEIR corner of the internet.

It’s where a child can become a published author, see their masterpiece displayed online, and proudly share it with grandparents, friends and family. Whether it’s an amazing piece of writing completed in one of our sessions or something they’ve gone home and created independently because they felt inspired, we’re proud to showcase it. ✨✨✨

In fact, some of our favourite Hall of Fame moments are the ones that happen outside of our sessions. When a child chooses to keep learning at home because they’ve discovered confidence, curiosity and joy in learning, that’s something truly worth celebrating.
.Because at The Learning Tree, we don’t just focus on what happens in the 55 minutes we’re together. We focus on the whole child - their confidence, their wellbeing, their progress at school, and the learner they’re becoming at home.

The Hall of Fame isn’t just about displaying work.

It’s about helping children believe, “I did that… and I’m proud of it.” 🌳💚

People often ask why we choose to teach in small groups instead of only offering 1:1 tuition.

Here’s why.

The magic doesn’t just come from having a qualified teacher. It comes from what happens between the children too.

When a child explains their thinking, listens to another strategy, asks a question, spots an error or helps a peer, they aren’t just completing today’s task- they’re strengthening their own understanding.

Research from the Education Endowment Foundation suggests that structured peer tutoring can lead to around 6 additional months of progress, with collaborative learning approaches also showing strong gains when carefully planned.

That’s exactly why our groups are capped at just six children.

Small enough that every child has a voice.
Small enough that every misconception is noticed.
Small enough that every child can work at the pace they need.

At The Learning Tree, year groups don’t define expectations.

The curriculum is our guide - not our ceiling.

If a child needs more time, we slow down without pressure.

If they’re ready for more, we stretch them beyond age-related expectations.

Most importantly, we create a space where children feel safe enough to say:

“I don’t understand.”

“Can you explain that differently?”

“I’ve got another idea.” (This one makes my heart burst! ❤️)

Because confidence grows when children know it’s okay not to know… yet.

And that’s often where the biggest breakthroughs begin. 🌳
