Mastering Maths with Saira Maths tuition for 11-17 year-olds, up to and including GCSE. Maths examiner. I have helped hundreds of students through their GCSEs.

I have over 20 years of experience in schools with students of all abilities and as a private tutor, online and in-person. I offer Maths tuition (online and face-to-face) for children at KS2, KS3 and KS4. I'm a qualified Maths teacher at KS3 and KS4 (secondary), with over 20 years of experience with students of all abilities in school. My satisfaction is in seeing my students excel in their work a

nd understanding it, whether that be in Grade 9 or 5. I have delivered private tuition online and face-to-face for over 10 years at the primary and secondary levels. Numeracy specialist – experience with Level 1 and 2 functional skills in Maths, improving non-calculator skills (essential for Paper 1 at GCSE) and working with EAL students. Experience teaching Mathematics at KS2 - I home-educated my children for a few years at the primary level and also currently tutor KS2 pupils. DBS – checked

I follow a Mastery approach which enables children to gain skills and confidence rapidly and transfer those to their work outside of tuition.

I had the opportunity to ponder over this book while away on holiday a few weeks ago. It compares the theories of Freud versus Adler.
I quite liked the idea of "horizontal relationships" (everyone is a comrade) with people around us, rather then "vertical" (which are based on hierarchy). This still means maintaining that respect in a student-teacher relationship but accepting that one is not above the other (and we can both learn from each other). I've always found this works really well in my private tuition (and its something that I've naturally done, even before reading this book).
Giving excessive praise is not good - when a tutee gives me a great answer, I should say "thank you", rather than "well done".
Pause for thought here....

I think most teachers agree with this. The curriculum should be designed so that learners can enjoy learning, and see learning as a lifelong skill. Play before the age of 7 should be a priority.
