We’re delighted to announce the publication of The Endurance Photographs, a remarkable new visual record of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s legendary Trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914-17.

When their ship was crushed by ice in the Weddell Sea in 1915, the expedition’s 28 members embarked upon a gruelling 10-month escape over ice and sea. Photographer Frank Hurley documented the journey, rescuing all the fragile negatives he could carry.

The book presents new full definition scans from Hurley’s original glass-plate negatives, revealing previously unseen details from the Endurance expedition, alongside expert essays and a complete catalogue of the 280 surviving negatives.

To mark the launch, we’ll be hosting an event at the Society on Tuesday 30 June, with expert presentations and the opportunity to view original archive material from the expedition.

The Endurance Photographs is available for pre order today ✨
