Research Assistant / Associate looking at Sustainable solutions to controlling pest species in small island ecosystems (Maldives)

Supervisor: Dr Richard Gill
Location: Silwood Park, Imperial College London & Grantham Institute & Maldives (6 month position, with intention to extend)

Application deadline: 27th Feb 2016 (midnight GMT); Estimated start date: April or May 2017

Small island ecosystems are increasingly under threat, with isolated islands considered to be in a state of delicate ecological balance and susceptible to anthropogenic activities and climate change. A further threat is the impact and damage caused by [often invasive] insect pests and their management. Small islands are susceptible to outbreaks of pest species therefore effective control is important for the stability of these small island ecosystems. Yet ironically the most common method of control is the widespread use of insecticides which may be having direct impact on the natural balance of these ecosystems.
Insect pest control on small islands has primarily involved the heavy and spatially non-targeted use of insecticides. The inadvertent effect this has on local wildlife is not fully understood and rarely monitored, but there is concern that pesticide residues filter through the food chain (and ecological network) including harming pest natural enemies (organisms that predate or parasitize insect pests), as well as leaching or running-off into the surrounding marine environment. We must therefore better understand how island populations respond to pesticide exposure including the evolution of resistance across different species.

Approximately three months of the project will be based on two Maldivian islands and look to achieve a number of milestones, including: establishing a robust and standardised monitoring scheme and experimental designs to monitor island invertebrate abundance and diversity across spatial and temporal scales relative to locations of insecticide application; identify pest hotspots and initiate development of new methods to target pests and allow more sustainable control. This will likely involve focusing on: the control of mosquito and hairy caterpillar populations using trap methods and spatial mapping; and revealing pesticide resistance by conducting standardised pesticide exposure assays and quantify vegetative damage.
