A promising new development in the fight against one of the world's deadliest cancers! An experimental drug based on University of California research has shown encouraging results in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer, a disease that has long resisted effective treatment. The findings from UCLA, UC San Diego, and UCSF offer a potential investigational treatment option for patients with limited alternatives and signal a new chapter in a field where progress has been painfully slow. The full story of this research is a testament to the power of sustained scientific investment.

Climate change isn't just making California hotter, it's making it more hospitable to dengue fever. A new UC Berkeley study finds that the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which carries the dengue virus, is spreading into more of California's cities as temperatures rise. With no treatment available and severe cases potentially life-threatening, the research is a timely warning about the widening health consequences of a warming planet. It's a story of global significance: dengue is already endemic in many parts of the world, and climate change is redrawing the map of where it can take hold.

Could one of the world's most widely used weight-loss drugs also slow down the pace of biological aging? A new clinical trial from UC San Diego provides the first controlled evidence that semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy) measurably slows biological aging markers across multiple organ systems, including the brain, heart, kidneys and liver. Researchers are careful to note these are early signals, not a cure, but the findings open a genuinely exciting new chapter in the science of longevity.

Could the loss of a single species collapse an entire ecosystem? A landmark field experiment in Kenya involving UC Merced ecologist Matthew Hutchinson has delivered rare, real-world proof that it can. When elephants were excluded from large experimental plots, populations of dung beetles collapsed — and no other herbivore could fill the gap. The findings offer a powerful, concrete illustration of how the loss of a single well-connected species can ripple through an entire ecosystem and why protecting those key species matters.

A sobering new study from UC Davis and UCLA researchers has found that airborne nanoparticles of chromium-6, a known carcinogen, were present in communities around the 2025 Los Angeles wildfire cleanup zones, potentially reaching areas six to nine miles downwind from the burn sites. The particles are too small to see, can enter the circulatory system rapidly and were detected at concentrations hundreds of times the normal background levels two months after the fires were extinguished. Published in Nature Communications, the research is an important reminder that the health impact of urban wildfires does not end when the flames go out. As wildfire risk grows worldwide, this is science that resonates well beyond California.
