What an extraordinary evening for skywatchers!

Yesterday, 12 August 2026, we captured this beautiful sequence of the partial solar eclipse from North West London using a simple pinhole projection. The images show the Moon gradually moving across the face of the Sun — transforming the projected image from a bright disc into an increasingly slender crescent before slowly revealing the Sun again.

But what exactly is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking some or all of the Sun’s light and casting its shadow onto Earth. Whether we see a partial or total eclipse depends on where we are standing within that shadow.

🌍 What made yesterday especially remarkable?

The astronomical event was actually a total solar eclipse for observers within a narrow path crossing parts of Greenland, Iceland and Spain. Here in London, however, we witnessed a spectacular deep partial eclipse, with approximately 91% of the Sun covered at its maximum at around 7:13 pm.

It was the largest solar eclipse visible from the UK since 1999 — making it a very special opportunity for a generation of young skywatchers. We won’t see another eclipse this close to totality from Britain until 2081!

📷 Our photographs were made using pinhole projection — a wonderfully simple way of observing an eclipse indirectly. A tiny opening projected an image of the Sun onto a surface, allowing us to follow the changing shape without looking directly at the Sun.

At STEM Dorado, moments like this remind us that science doesn't only happen in laboratories or textbooks. Sometimes, all you need to do is look around, stay curious and start exploring. ✨

A huge thank you to Samantha Dobbie and The Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) hosting the BiFoR – STEM Dorado Inspiration Day.

It was an incredible learning experience for both STEM Dorado Ltd. students and instructors alike.

From exploring air quality and setting up particle capture experiments, to identifying and investigating leaves, and finally visiting the Lapworth Museum of Geology — where we not only explored the fascinating displays but also became fossil detectives — we’ve loved every moment of it!
