Visual Medicine - A Radically Transformative Creative Practice

One of the many joys of my life is that painting is the way in which I have come to know Earth...painting is the way I know I belong here.

Painting is the way that my soul has learnt to speak with the Ancestors and the Pattern Creation Beings that hold the worlds in place. When these beings come through on a walk or in the studio - I feel a palpable sense of familiarity. I know them because I feel them in my bones - not just my eye sockets but deep in the resonating pockets of my marrow. They are the opposite of clean and white - they are wild water spilling beyond edges - they have their own grammar that defies our worded structures - but when you feel them - a right coherence settles in - and you/I/we can breathe knowing they are still with us.

Visual Language is our first language. It is the language we dream in.

For more than 25 years, I have created thousands of small paintings through a practice I call Visual Medicine™️.
Seen individually, these works may appear to be abstract. Yet when gathered together, another reality becomes visible. What emerges is not just a collection of images, but a visual ecology.

Across decades, recurring forms arrive spontaneously—without a plan, a sketch, or even a paintbrush. Cells, rivers, seeds, stars, ancestors, and serpents appear repeatedly, creating a long conversation in a pattern language that belongs simultaneously to the human psyche and the living Earth.

This is the language of the material world, of living systems, of roots, memory, and imagination.

And you are invited to speak it.

Painting is a way of giving form to what is already existent, yet invisible to us until the fine layers of paint reveal the animacy of the world already present.

One of the unmourned losses of capitalism is that we have imbibed, without a blink, the impulse to extract - this applies to how we see. Our world is contorted by the insidiousness of visual patriarchy - the flattening of living beauty. We have lost the everyday capacity to commune with the materiality of the world and the dimensions of living-ness in between the layers.

Painting can be a way of opening a portal to these dimensions.

One of the first experiences of encountering living animacy was with my high school art teacher - Mrs Eve. She gave us an exercise to make a design using thick waxy crayon then apply watery acrylic paint over the top.

As my scribbled crayon marks appeared through the watery veil of black paint, I had an embodied sense of revelation. Seeing the pattern through the paint I sensed the painting had its own life - a visual voice and it was speaking to me. It said: No matter what is done to you - or what you do to yourself - your soul will shine through the darkness...

That moment of hearing, sensing, apprehending the voice of the painting initiated a lifetime journey of cultivating a relationship with the materiality of the world.

Turn by turn, making tens of thousands of small and large paintings has led me to know that the material world has a voice – multiversal, tentacular, mycelial, sporic and speaks in the same language of the Earth itself...🌎

My Visual Medicine studio...

Visual Medicine™️ is the creative spiritual practice I have developed and stewarded for over 25 years. It brings together a radically simple, transformative way of painting without brushes with visual meditation and reflective writing.

You don’t need any painting experience. You don’t need to think of yourself as an artist - only a willingness to listen, and to allow what wants to come through.

The paintings are not expressions of what we already know. They are co-creative conversations with the wellspring of universal creativity that is the matrix of the world.

Like dreams, they hold the seeds of conscious and unconscious thought and something else, mysterious, that reaches far beyond our own knowing. When we foster this connection, the paintings, like dreams, begin to speak to us.

Visual Medicine is not only a way of making exquisitely complex images - it is a transformative way of seeing, thinking, and connecting with the possibilities inherent within creative intelligence itself.

Through a practice of connecting, allowing, receiving, listening, activating, aligning — something extraordinary can happen. New thoughts. New associations. New body memories. New possibilities…

Like moving clouds, or a fast-flowing stream glinting over speckled rocks, or birds gathering into a murmuration becoming, in a single moment a feather or a flower petal opening in morning warmth.

Friends, I have been quieter here than usual this past year or so. I have been deep inside my painting practice and my Visual Medicine™️ teaching. Both have deepened in ways that are profoundly confirming.

I can only describe this unfolding as the opening of a living portal. The paintings that have come through are transmissions - messages from dimensions of knowing and connection. In this realm everything is emergent and interwoven in the luminous body of Creation itself.
