The London Interdisciplinary Biosciences Consortium (LIDo) is an immensely successful collaborative partnership offering world-class interdisciplinary research across the breadth of BBSRC scientific remit. http://lido-dtp.ac.uk/

LIDo unites an exciting team of outstanding universities and unique specialist institutions to provide a truly remarkable and unparalleled opportunity for innovative cutting-edge research in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant and scientifically stimulating cities.

In September 2020 LIDo will be offering 27 fully funded DTP studentships and 11 fully funded Industrial CASE PhD studentships; these include home/EU tuition fees and a tax-free stipend in the region of £17,009. Candidates are welcome to apply for both the DTP route and one or more iCASE projects if they wish.

DTP Route

In the first year of the programme DTP students will undertake two 4-month research projects in different partner institutions, selecting from a catalogue of over 200 topics, each associated with a thesis project. The choice of PhD topic is finalised after the second rotation project when students will be well placed to make an informed, considered, decision.

Research opportunities are available in a wide range of areas including, but not limited to Ageing, Animal Health and Welfare, Crop, Plant and Soil Sciences, Immunology, Biotechnology, Microbiology and Microbial Food Safety, Neuroscience, Structural, Synthetic and Systems Biology. Examples of some of the projects available can be found on our website: http://lido-dtp.ac.uk/lido-projects.html

DTP students undertake a compulsory 3-month Professional Internship for PhD Students (PIPS) during their PhD. This placement provides experience of the wider economic and social contexts and careers within which the research and transferable skills developed during their PhD programme can be usefully employed. Current students have secured a diverse range of placements at institutions, both in the UK and overseas, including learned societies, museums, biotech companies, and science communication and policy organisations.

iCASE Route

Industrial collaborative (iCASE) students begin working on their named project from the start of the course. These highly vetted and approved projects represent genuine partnerships between academics within the LIDo consortium and industrial colleagues, allowing students to experience both distinctive environments in a mutually productive and supportive team.

As part of the programme iCASE students will undertake an extended placement with their non-academic partner. The placement will be at least 3 months but could be extended to a maximum of 18 months. In addition to the inestimable experience of an industrial research environment, the student will also receive business-related training.

Details of the available iCASE projects will be available from early November. Please check back then for further details.

Training and Cohort Building

During their all first-year students will form part of a large and engaged cohort of DTP students receiving advanced training in fundamental and advanced mathematical, computational and statistical skills for interdisciplinary and systems biology research. Expert in-house training in biological concepts from leading LIDo academics is available for students joining us from a non-biological background, as well as exposure to the history, trends and structure of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries via Birkbeck’s Bioindustry MSc module.

Each year a week of cross research council remit teaching cushions the two rotations providing students not only the opportunity to hear from academic, industry, government and not-for-profit speakers on a range of topics in the boundaries of BBSRC remit, but also affording the occasion to network with students on our sister DTP programmes as the invitation to attend is shared widely across London’s postgraduate research community.

The extraordinary LIDo teaching and research-intensive environment sits within a framework of robust and established cohort building activities, culminating each year in an academic retreat for the students. This popular residential event is designed and planned by the students, for the students.

Application

We enthusiastically invite applications by all highly motivated students from a wide range of academic backgrounds including biological, physical, computational, engineering or mathematical disciplines.

Applicants must hold, or be expected to achieve, a first or high upper second class honours degree (or equivalent), or an MSci or other Masters degree.

The application pack can be download from our website: http://lido-dtp.ac.uk/lido-apply.html

The application window will close on Friday 24th January 2020, early application is essential as both references must also be received by this date.
