We’re pleased to introduce three more speakers joining us at the Maybo Masterclass & Conference 2026 — Claire, Karen and Olivia from the Great Western Hospital Education Team.

Together, they bring more than 80 years of combined nursing experience, alongside extensive expertise in clinical education, staff development and their roles as accredited Maybo trainers.

Claire is the Clinical Skills Lead, leading the delivery and development of clinical skills training across the Trust. Karen is a Training Co-ordinator, specialising in the development and education of Band 2–4 Healthcare Support Workers. Olivia is also a Training Co-ordinator, leading on the delivery and coordination of mandatory training programmes.

At the conference, Claire, Karen and Olivia will present:

Their combined experience spans clinical skills, healthcare support worker development, mandatory training and Maybo education, with a shared focus on helping staff build confidence, strengthen communication and de-escalation skills, and create safer experiences for both patients and colleagues.

When is it safe to intervene?

New requirements under the Bus Services Act 2025 mean bus operators need to prepare drivers and other passenger-facing staff to identify and respond appropriately to crime and anti-social behaviour — and, where safe to do so, help prevent it.

But an appropriate response does not always mean direct intervention. Staff need the judgement and practical skills to recognise escalation, assess risk, de-escalate where possible and know when seeking support or disengaging is the safer option.

Supporting people living with dementia can be deeply rewarding — but it can also place significant emotional and physical demands on the people providing that care.

One study found that caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s took around 9 days longer to heal from a small wound than people who were not providing that care.

So while staff burnout has rightly been on the agenda for some time, an important question remains: are we doing enough to support the people who support some of the most vulnerable people in our communities?

Working within intensive care, Laura and Kerry bring frontline clinical experience alongside their roles as Maybo trainers.

Laura Colston is a Practice Development Sister and Lead Trainer for Maybo within Neuro Intensive Care, with extensive experience working in critical care. Kerry Lawrence is a Senior Sister and Maybo Trainer working within General Intensive Care.

At the conference, Laura and Kerry will present:

Their session will explore the real-world impact of Maybo training in an intensive care environment, including how it has influenced:

Reducing restrictive practice in dementia care starts long before an incident occurs.

The Care Workforce Pathway highlights the importance of dementia knowledge alongside positive behaviour support, communication, mental capacity and understanding restrictive practices.

CQC’s new restraint requirements for ambulance services are about far more than whether staff have completed the right training.

From 17 August 2026, new provider registration applications will need to evidence how prevention, de-escalation, restrictive intervention, incident learning and leadership oversight connect across the organisation.

The bigger question is no longer just:

“Is our restraint training compliant?”

It is:

“Can we demonstrate a system that prevents unnecessary restriction, supports proportionate decision-making and learns from every incident?”

Great to bring some of the Maybo team together last week for our Trainer Recertification.

As always, there was plenty of great discussion, teamwork and valuable CPD — sharing experiences, challenging thinking and continuing to develop our practice together.

Recertification is about more than refreshing skills. It’s a valuable opportunity to reconnect, reflect, learn from one another and make sure we continue to deliver training to the highest standard.

A big thank you to everyone who took part — a great couple of days with a great team.

And, of course, we couldn’t resist the opportunity for a drone photo!
