In an era of AI and deepfakes, it’s important to assess and check any videos or images you see online. AI fake videos of people, or deepfakes, can make a politician look like they said something they never said, enabling the spread of false information.

To help people - especially first-time voters - understand and make sense of the political ads they’ll be seeing in the run-up to election day, take a look at our 10-point guide, created in partnership with the Advertising Association.

Internet Matters found that just half (53%) of young people who see news, politics or current affairs content online say they feel confident telling whether that information is true or false.

Consider using fact checking websites like BBC Verify, C4's FactCheck Blog, Full Fact, or The Ferret.

In our 10-point guide, created in partnership with the Advertising Association, we help young people – especially first-time voters – understand and make sense of the political ads they’ll be seeing in the run-up to election day.

Without a single regulator for political ads, various bodies play a role in the regulation:

➡️Ofcom enforces a political ad ban on TV and radio
➡️The Electoral Commission UK oversees election spending limits, transparency and imprints
➡️The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) plays a role in data protection and privacy

Whilst political campaigns aren't subject to the same rules as commercial advertising, other laws do apply. For example, making false statements that damage a candidate's reputation could be defamation.
