Nigerian Student Visas to UK Jump 59% in 2025, Defying Global Downturn
New UK government data shows a sharp rise in study visas granted to Nigerian students. The number grew by 59% to 30,204 in the year ending December 2025.
This cements Nigeria's position among the top four source countries for UK international students. It also makes Nigeria one of the fastest-growing markets despite stricter UK immigration rules.
Policy Shift Changes Applicant Profile
The overall number of UK study visas is down 35% from a 2023 peak. This is due to new restrictions that mostly prevent students from bringing dependants.
While total visas fell, main applicant visas rose 4%. However, dependant visas crashed by 87% from pre-2024 levels.
For Nigeria, this means the typical applicant is changing. The rise suggests more younger, single Nigerians are applying, or those who can study without family.
Nigeria Leads New Wave of Source Markets
India and China remain the top two source countries. Yet, their numbers are stabilising or falling. Chinese student visas dropped 15%.
Nigeria is part of a new wave driving UK university recruitment. Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh also saw strong growth. This helps the UK diversify its international student base.
Extensions and Graduate Route Remain Key
Nigerian students are not just arriving in bigger numbers. They are also staying longer. In 2025, 3,894 Nigerians in the UK got extensions to continue their studies.
This puts Nigeria in the top three nationalities for study extensions, behind China and India.
The UK's graduate route remains a major draw. It lets graduates stay and work for two years after their studies. Recent student cohorts show higher retention rates, linked to these work opportunities.
Implications for Nigerian Students
The sustained demand reflects the strong appeal of UK postgraduate education for Nigerians. It also points to domestic pressures like limited university capacity at home.
The UK is still a top destination, and Nigerian students are central to its strategy. Future growth will depend on how students and institutions adapt to the tighter, more selective immigration rules.

Official data for the year ending December 2025 confirms a significant decline in UK work visa issuance, with 168,000 visas granted to main applicants—a 19% drop from 2024 and a 50% decrease from the 2023 peak. This downward trend is primarily attributed to a series of restrictive policy changes introduced by successive governments to reduce net migration.
Key Impacts by Visa Category
Health and Care Worker Visas: This sector saw the most dramatic decline, with grants falling by 91% from their 2023 peak to just 13,000 in 2025. A critical factor was the March 2024 ban on care workers bringing family dependants, alongside the complete closure of the route for new overseas care worker applications in July 2025.
Skilled Worker Visas: Grants for other skilled routes fell by 36%, totaling roughly 48,000. This was largely driven by a sharp increase in the minimum salary threshold, which rose from £26,200 to £38,700 in April 2024, and reached £41,700 for many roles by July 2025.
Medium-Skilled Occupations: The government raised the skills threshold for most general routes to graduate level (RQF 6) in July 2025, effectively removing over 100 previously eligible occupations from the system.
Driving Policy Changes in 2025
The Home Office implemented several measures outlined in the May 2025 "Restoring Control" White Paper:
Salary & Skill Increases: Beyond the standard Skilled Worker threshold rise, the Immigration Skills Charge paid by employers was increased by 32% in December 2025.
Stricter English Requirements: New applicants for Skilled Worker and High Potential Individual visas have been required to meet a higher B2 English standard (up from B1) since January 2026.
Dependant Restrictions: Most workers in below-degree-level roles—even those on the new Temporary Shortage List (TSL)—are now banned from bringing dependants.
Route to Settlement: The government proposed doubling the standard qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) from 5 years to 10 years for many migrants, with plans to begin implementation in April 2026.
While these measures have successfully reduced legal migration numbers, experts from the Work Rights Centre warn of worsening labour shortages in critical sectors like social care and construction

In its December 2025 review of salary requirements, the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) recommended keeping the general salary threshold for the UK Skilled Worker visa at £41,700.
This recommendation aims to maximize fiscal benefits while ensuring essential sectors can continue to recruit needed talent.
Key details from the MAC's 2025 recommendations include:
General Threshold Maintenance: The MAC suggests maintaining the current £41,700 level to balance net migration goals with positive economic contributions.
Occupation-Specific Rate Reductions: While keeping the general threshold steady, the MAC recommended reducing occupation-specific "going rates" from the median to the 25th percentile to prevent undercutting domestic workers without inadvertently excluding mid-market roles.
New Entrant Rate: A single new entrant salary threshold of £33,400 was proposed to ensure graduates can still be recruited through the migration system.
Discount Changes: The MAC recommended abolishing the PhD salary discount, arguing there is no evidence PhD holders earn less than average workers.
Health and Care: For standard occupations in this route not on national pay scales, the MAC recommended a general threshold of £31,300.
Annual Updates: The committee advised that salary requirements should be reviewed and updated annually in line with wage growth data.
