Health services must meet deaf people's communication needs: Caitlin's story 15/04/2026

“Whenever I go to the GP, I tell them that I’m deaf and that I can’t hear them when they call my name. But I was once left waiting for an hour because they thought I wasn’t there - even though I had asked them when I arrived to notify me otherwise.”

Health services must meet deaf people's communication needs: Caitlin's story Caitlin shares her experience as a deaf nurse and patient, highlighting why Wales must improve healthcare accessibility and meet deaf people's communication needs.

This week is Sign Language Week 2026.

But what does that have to do with learning to lipread?

In our lipreading classes, we borrow the British Sign Language (BSL) alphabet. We use the BSL alphabet to show people the first letter of words. This is particularly useful if the letter indicated does not have an obvious lip shape. It is very helpful if the student needs a little prompting.
Learning the BSL alphabet is an important part of beginners lipreading classes. You will continue to use the BSL alphabet throughout your lipreading learning journey.

Lipreading lessons are not BSL lessons - but we do borrow the alphabet.
