If you are a beginner to the skill of lipreading, then we can offer both face-to-face and online lipreading lessons.
Most of our students have hearing loss at some level. This can be very reassuring to a new student, as you know that the people in the room understand your experiences.
We have lipreading classes at the college in Covent Garden, Central London, or online via Zoom.
These courses are filling up fast, so it is suggested that you register and book your place as soon as you can.
We have daytime and evening options. All classes start week beginning the 21st of September and last for 10 weeks.

Unable to get to the college for face to face classes? Lipreading and managing hearing loss: improvers module 1 is an online course available to all lipreading students who have some experience of lipreading classes.
These improver level classes can help you keep up to date with your skillset and develop further strategies for helping with your hearing loss.
These particular courses are not aimed at beginners. You will need to have some experience of lipreading classes already.

We have spaces on our ONLINE lipreading taster sessions tomorrow.
In this friendly, relaxed session, you'll explore the basics of lipreading, learn why some sounds look alike, practise simple lipreading activities, and find out about the other skills that support effective communication, such as facial expressions and context.
These online workshops are delivered in spoken English, not BSL.

The taster is on Tues 8th Sept 14:30 - 16:00. This session is delivered over Zoom, so you will need access to a computer with Zoom.
All of our lipreading tutors are fully qualified and ATLA registered.

Cost is £19.

Please sign the Petition to Fund Access to Lipreading Classes, and Classify them as Health and Wellbeing Courses.

Lipreading courses can be essential rehabilitation for anyone who has lost some or all of their hearing. Therefore the Government should fund access to them and ensure they are classified as health and wellbeing courses rather than leisure activities, to recognise their importance.

Lipreading and Managing Hearing Loss: Improvers Module 1 ONLINE starting September 2026.

Have you completed a beginners lipreading course and are looking to take your skills that little bit further? Our next Online Improvers Module 1 course is now open for immediate enrolment.

This 10-week course is designed to help you develop the lipreading skills you have acquired in your beginner's classes and develop further strategies for face-to-face communication

Who is this course for? You will need a basic understanding of lipreading consonant & vowel theory and should be able to fingerspell.

Course details:

Online, via Zoom.
10 weekly sessions, daytime or evening option.
Starting Wednesday 23rd of September.
Full fee: £179 | Senior: £116 | Concession: £90

The Centre for Deaf Education at City Lit has been supporting deaf and hard of hearing learners since 1919. All our lipreading tutors complete a specialist teacher training course and are ATLA The Association of Teachers of Lipreading to Adults registered.

Some places remain on our managing hearing loss at work workshop. This is offered on Friday the 19th of June and will run from 10am until 1pm. The workshop takes place at the College in Covent Garden, Central London.

Why Learn Lipreading at City Lit?
