One of the things we value at Greenwich Music School is that our teachers are active professional musicians, alongside their teaching.

It means that children learn from musicians who are continuing to perform and create. They're out working in the music industry and bringing that experience and artistry to their lessons.

From September, children at one of our partner primary schools will be making music on this new keyboard.

It was funded through a Jack Petchey Achievement Award won by GMS student Ivan, and will be used in Greenwich Music School lessons throughout the year.

Thank you to Ivan and the Jack Petchey Foundation for helping create more opportunities for young people to make music.

We're looking forward to hearing lots of music coming from it over the coming year!

Congratulations to GMS student Lola, who achieved a Distinction in her ABRSM Grade 2 Musical Theatre exam!

Musical theatre asks students to combine singing, acting and storytelling, and it’s great to see Lola’s commitment and hard work recognised with such a strong result.

Well done Lola, and thank you to her teacher Eleanor for supporting her along the way.

Musical skills often develop slowly, gradually. It’s one of those things where it can seem there's little change in the short term, but a huge amount of change over a longer period.

From week to week, it can be hard to spot much difference in what a student can do. But if you step back and look at where they were three or six months ago, it often becomes much clearer just how much they’ve learnt and achieved.

A good teacher sees that progress in the moment, even when it’s not obvious - they understand where each step is leading, how it builds towards the next, and how that bigger picture connects with what motivates and interests the learner.

Sometimes the most rewarding part of a concert is hearing what happens away from the stage.

Celine and her mum reflect on how her relationship with music has grown over the years, from those early lessons to performing with confidence and now looking ahead to a diploma.

One of the things we really value at Greenwich Music School is that our teachers perform professionally alongside their teaching.

There’s something special about seeing your own teacher in concert. Students get to experience the same musicianship and creativity that inspire their lessons each week, and it helps them see that making music isn’t just something that happens in lessons.

Next Tuesday, GMS piano teacher Cèlia Margalef Boquera will be giving a lunchtime recital at Charlton House. As it falls during the school holidays, many of her students have the chance to come along and hear her perform live - an opportunity that doesn’t often come around during term time.

Whether you’re one of Cèlia’s students, a regular at the Charlton House concerts, or simply enjoy live piano music, we’d encourage you to come along if you’re free.

Lots of families start looking for music lessons around this time of year, and parents often ask us what they should look for in a teacher.

Qualifications and recommendations are useful, but they’re only part of the picture. After the first lesson, pay attention to how your child responds. Are they talking about what they did? Keen to show you something they’ve learnt? Looking forward to the next lesson?

Those early signs of enthusiasm matter. Children who enjoy lessons are much more likely to keep making music, and it’s that consistency over months and years that leads to real progress.

Congratulations to GMS student Soriba, who achieved a Distinction in his ABRSM Grade 3 piano exam!

Here’s Soriba performing at his school concert in March. It’s brilliant to see his hard work, confidence and musical progress recognised with this exam success.

We’re pleased to share that Greenwich Music School has received a Royal Borough of Greenwich Civic Award in the Arts & Entertainment category.

The award was given:
“in appreciation and recognition for your outstanding contribution to the social, economic and physical wellbeing of the Royal Borough; in particular for growing into a thriving organisation, supporting hundreds of young and adult learners each week, across schools and community venues.”

For us, this award is especially meaningful because it recognises work happening week by week to make music part of everyday life in Greenwich - through our school partners, in our own venues, with our community partners and online.

Our team of brilliant teachers support children, young people and adults to build musical skill, confidence and creativity. As we continue developing our work with schools, we want more children to have the chance to learn an instrument, to make music regularly and to experience the personal growth that music education can make possible.

Thank you to our teachers, students, families, school partners, venues, funders and supporters!

Congratulations to Laura, one of our adult students, on her results at the Bromley Festival of Music and Drama - 2nd in the Operatic class and 1st in the German Lieder class!

Laura studies singing with Sophie and has performed at many of our student concerts over the past few years. Well done!
