Shakuhachi player based in London. Enjoys honkyoku (meditative), min'yo (folk) and experimental mu Simplicity, honesty, directness.

I am a creative artist and wilderness guide, and I try to explore the common ground between the two. Fascinated by Japanese arts and philosophy, in my work I am interested in not taking for granted the present moment: surrendering and forgetting, being open to what is here, now. What fascinates me about improvising and being in the wilderness is that they both almost demand a certain presence, a being in-tune, listening. I see improvisation as a yet-unvisited wilderness, with its surprises and risks, the need for a certain humility and honesty; a landscape unravelling moment to moment as one treads through it.

Really enjoyed being part of a panel debating cultural appropriation in music last night at Philharmonia Orchestra. Great to dig into the origins of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade and have a proper conversation about where appreciation ends and appropriation begins.

A fabulous concert afterwards too, with Gabriela Ortiz's new cello concerto, and Marin Alsop being predictably phenomenal.

Experiencing the debate and the concert back to back made for a great night out!

Thanks to the team at Philharmonia for producing such a well-run event, and to Richard Bratby, Adrian Varela and Katy Hamilton for being such good company on the panel!
