The map that gets millions of Londoners home every day was designed by someone whose job had nothing to do with maps.

Harry Beck was an engineering draughtsman who spent his days drawing electrical circuit diagrams for the Underground. In 1931 he realised that passengers don’t need geography when they’re underground, they just need to know which line to take and where to change, so he redrew the whole network like a circuit.

London Transport rejected it for being too radical. Beck revised it, they relented, and when the pocket map finally appeared in 1933 passengers embraced it instantly. His schematic style became the standard for transit maps around the world.

Proof that the best design ideas often come from looking at a problem sideways.

Save these font combos for your next project.

Or should that be typeface combos?

The typeface is the design itself, like “Baskerville” and the font is one specific version of it, like “Baskerville Bold”.

Designers have argued about this for decades, but say either in a studio and everyone will know what you mean.
