Hi everyone, just checking if you have any stories about trying to drive a stick shift manual car? My first experience of dealing with the clutch was when I crashed my motorcycle into my dad's green house because I did not operate the clutch in time! Things have got much better since then!

Welcome to everyone who has joined How to Drive a Stick Shift Manual Car recently. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any manual driving questions or comments.

Explanation of the clutch.

In simple terms, the clutch breaks the connection between the engine, which is turning at 800 times a minute at idle( ie. without pressing the gas pedal), and the gearbox.
1) This is the position where the clutch is up and the car is in neutral. the car will not move because it is in neutral, if the brake is on.
2) In-order to get into gear, the clutch has now been pushed down, and the red and blue plates have come apart breaking the connection from the engine.
3) The car has now been put into first gear, but won`t move because the clutch is still down.
4) Now the clutch has been brought up about half way until the red and blue plates start to rub together (this is called "THE BITING POINT".
The only thing stopping the car from moving now, is that the car is either being held with the handbrake or the footbrake. Normally you hold it on the handbrake if moving off from a parked position.
