🄊 WHAT HAPPENS BEFORE WE EVEN HIT THE PADS?

HITPADSā„¢ isn’t only about learning punches and kicks.

Before we bring in the pads, we can first develop something fundamental:

ways to move.

In this introduction, I’m exploring three different dimensions:

UPRIGHT — stepping, positioning and moving through space.

MIDDLE — lowering the body, supporting ourselves and transitioning.

GROUND — moving, rolling and learning different ways to organise the body close to the floor.

These movements gradually become part of a movement vocabulary.

Then we can start adding another layer:

🄊 Striking.
šŸ‘€ Reaction.
ā†”ļø Evasion.
⚔ Changes of direction.
šŸŒ€ Flow.

And that’s when the practice starts becoming HITPADS.

You don’t need to be a fighter.

You don’t need previous kickboxing experience.

You just need to be willing to move, learn and try something different.

Sometimes the simplest tool changes the whole practice. šŸŽ¾

A tennis ball doesn’t look like much.

But once I introduce it into movement, I have something external to organise around.

I shift my weight.

Move the ball.

Catch.

Change level.

Move from upright into middle and low positions.

Rise.

Reconnect.

Continue.

Now the practice isn’t only about performing a movement.

I have to watch, coordinate, time the catch, manage the ball and keep my body moving.

And that’s what interests me.

Instead of collecting more exercises, I can take something incredibly simple and keep changing the movement problem.

Different direction.

Different level.

Different speed.

Different catch.

Different solution.

Eventually, the individual movements begin connecting into a flow.

For me, this is where training starts feeling less like repeating exercises and more like learning a movement language.

The tennis ball is only the instrument.

The body is the practice.

What happens when shadowboxing moves beyond one position?

Strike.

Pivot.

Change direction.

Lower.

Transition.

Rise.

Strike again.

This HITPADSā„¢ Solo Flow isn’t about creating a complicated combination. It’s an exploration of how striking can connect with movement across different directions and levels.

Solo practice represents only one part of HITPADS. Partner padwork later introduces interaction, perception, decision and reaction.

What if a simple stick could completely change the way you train?

In this movement, I begin in a combat-inspired stance.

One arm holds the stick forward, almost like the position of a jab.

The other hand stays close to the face.

Then the movement becomes dynamic.

One hand receives the stick.

The other releases.

The hips rotate.

The trunk turns.

The shoulders organise.

And the hands have to arrive at exactly the right moment.

The goal is not simply to move faster.

The challenge is to keep the whole body connected while the movement becomes more reactive.

That means I’m training more than the arms.

I’m training:

Rotation.

Timing.

Reflex.

Coordination.

Awareness.

Concentration.

Balance.

For a martial artist, this can become useful conditioning.

But you do not need to practise martial arts to benefit from the principle.

Most training is very predictable.

The same movement.

The same tempo.

The same direction.

Sometimes the body needs a different problem.

Something that asks you to react.

Coordinate.

Organise.

And stay present.

That is where the stick becomes valuable.

It gives the body something to solve.

Don’t just train muscles.

Train movement.

Don’t collect exercises. Build understanding.
