I’ve just released a video that I found quite difficult to make.

It looks at three very serious safeguarding cases involving people working in nurseries and early years settings.

What struck me most wasn’t just what happened. It was how normal some of these people appeared to everyone around them.

Colleagues trusted them. Managers trusted them. Parents trusted them.

And in some cases there were warning signs before everything came to light.

That’s really what I wanted this video to focus on.

Not the shocking details for the sake of it, but what we can actually learn from these cases.

Were there signs that were missed?

Were concerns brushed aside?

Were staff too trusting?

Could better supervision or stronger safeguarding practice have stopped things earlier?

And most importantly, would you feel confident challenging a colleague if something just didn’t feel right?

It’s a difficult watch in places, but I genuinely think it’s an important one for anyone working in early years.

Early years funding could be changing and some of the proposals could directly affect how much money reaches providers.

The DfE is consulting on changes to SEND funding, local authority funding rules, provider payments and even Ofsted annual fees.

I’ve broken down the proposals including:

• what could change
• when the changes may happen
• what they could mean for nursery income
• how SEND funding could be affected
• why providers should respond before 14 September

Some of the changes could make funding more transparent and help more money reach settings, but there are also areas nursery owners need to look at carefully.

If you run a nursery, pre-school or childminding business, this is worth understanding before any decisions are made.

Most people think about opening a nursery from zero.

But another route is buying an existing nursery.

In this episode, I visited Bookworms Daycare and spoke with Ruba, one of the new owners/directors, and Kylie, the nursery manager, about what it’s really like when a nursery changes ownership.

We spoke about:

A lot of people assume that if a nursery is full, it must be doing well financially.

But that is not always the case.

A nursery can be full and still not make the profit it should.

Sometimes it’s because the sessions are not structured properly.

Sometimes Monday and Friday are too quiet.

Sometimes staffing costs are too high for the income coming in.

Sometimes fees have not been reviewed properly.

And sometimes the nursery feels busy, but the numbers are not actually working behind the scenes.

I’ve just recorded a video breaking this down in a simple way, because this is something I’m seeing more and more with both new and existing nursery owners.

The biggest point is this:

Full does not automatically mean profitable.

A nursery has to be structured properly.
