“I don’t need to fit in anywhere anymore. I can just be me.”

Bonny Allyson, Lead Tutor for The Awareness Centre’s Foundation Certificate in Counselling, shares her powerful journey of identity, belonging and becoming an intercultural therapist.

Mixed-race, with Nigerian and Jewish heritage, Bonny speaks openly about:
✨ Growing up feeling “not Black enough” and “not white enough”
✨ Experiencing racism from both Black and white communities
✨ Learning to embrace who she is without needing to fit in
✨ The responsibility and emotion of teaching future therapists
✨ The beauty of seeing more diversity in counselling training
✨ The importance of humility, vulnerability and curiosity in intercultural therapy

What drives her most?
Watching students challenge old beliefs, find their voice and grow into therapists who can hold space for others, no matter their story.

Her advice to trainees:

“Training will get hard. But holding space for another human being is one of the most powerful things you will ever do. It is worth it.”

For the past 20 years, The Awareness Centre has been proud to offer one of the largest and most established counselling placement programmes in the UK.

We have had the privilege of supporting thousands of trainee counsellors as they gained clinical experience and took their first steps into the profession.

As The Awareness Centre Training School continues to grow, we are evolving our placement programme to align more closely with our in-house training pathway.

From now on, counselling placements will be offered exclusively to students training with The Awareness Centre Training School.

This change reflects our vision for a fully integrated training and placement experience that supports students from their first class through to professional practice.

We want to express our sincere thanks to the many trainees and partner institutions who have been part of our placement community over the past two decades.

Mental health affects all of us, but research shows clear differences in how it is experienced and supported.

Recent findings reveal that 37.1% of women report high levels of anxiety, compared to 29.9% of men (PrioryGroup, 2025).
This difference also extends to help-seeking behaviour, with 41% of women having accessed counselling compared to 29% of men (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, 2025).

These figures highlight the importance of having diverse, well-trained counsellors who can understand different lived experiences and offer inclusive, culturally sensitive support to all clients.

At The Awareness Centre Training School, our counselling courses equip future therapists with the skills, self-awareness and understanding needed to meet the varied needs of the communities they serve.

Our Foundation and Diploma courses combine academic learning with reflective practice, helping students develop into compassionate, competent professionals.
