If you’re ready to move your riding up to a new level, look no further than a Survival Skills training course. WHAT MAKES SURVIVAL SKILLS DIFFERENT? Nearly all training in the UK (including post-test training such as IAM and RoSPA courses) is based on the police manual 'Motorcycle Roadcraft'. This promotes the idea that if we have 'better' skills, we're 'safer' riders. Unfortunately, there's no evidence that skills alone prevent crashes. The only way to come achieve a SUCCESSFUL riding strategy - ie, one that AVOIDS crashes - is to start by understanding HOW, WHERE and WHY crashes happens, then know WHAT to do to avoid getting caught out ourselves. In other words, a successful riding strategy depends not just on improving our skills, but on an appreciation of the causes of ERRORS - whether our own or someone else's - and how to avoid them if we can, and how to get out of trouble if we can't. We need to have a full understanding of the most common crashes which occur at junctions, in bends and when overtaking in order to be safer riders. Avoiding SURPRISE is crucial if we are to respond to emergencies. This is the Survival Skills approach to better riding and it works for ALL RIDERS AT ANY LEVEL. AN M6 FRAMEWORK BACKGROUND ARTICLE
Over the last three weeks, I've been explaining how we never see the whole road when riding, but a constantly-shifting slice from which our brains use the knowledge of what just happened, fragments of information about what's happening now, to create a mental 'Working Model' to infer what's going to happen in the next few seconds. This is often called 'Situational Awareness' and I've called the resulting “best guess” model the 'Perceptual Road'. I also explained that we cannot see 'everything' that's visible because the brain has neither the bandwidth nor the processing power to manage that. Our attention must be selective and is fine-tuned by the use of 'cues' and 'cueing'. We learn to filter out unimportant information, and prioritise the detection and analysis of the important information fragments.

However, neither the cue nor the cueing alone are sufficient — the next step is to bridge the gap between perception and action. This week, we're going to move on to what cognitive psychology calls 'schemas'.

1. Perception, comprehension, projection

Let's start with a quick review of last week, when I mentioned the three-level model of Situational Awareness.

Level 1: Perception of relevant elements (Cues & Cueing) — the eyes scan the environment and detect something — for example, a car at a junction. But just seeing it achieves nothing on its own.

Level 2: Comprehension of their meaning (The Working Mental Model) — we ask the “What if...?” question; what if the car turns into our path? But once again, that question on its own achieves nothing. It needs an answer.

Level 3: Projection of their future status (The What Happens Next Stage) — we answer the “What if...?” question which a “...Then this!” prediction by projecting the timeline forward into the immediate future to predict how hazard might develop into a threat: “If I maintain my speed and position and if that car pull outs, it's likely we will collide in a couple of seconds.”

It's not quite the straightforward sequential 1-2-3 process it might seem. Projection can influence what we look for; expectations and goals influence attention and perception; and Situational Awareness is constantly updated.

2. Projection — anticipating how the situation may develop

We can use the term 'projection' to describe the continuous process of looking beyond the 'here and now' to ask: “if my interpretation of the road is correct, what should I expect to happen, and if this continues, what am I going to have to deal with?”

“Lift your eyes”, “look further ahead”, or “search for the Limit Point” are all expressions aimed at developing this ability. But the rider isn't simply 'seeing more' or looking 'further ahead'. The aim is to extend the mental model into the future, giving the brain more time to recognise patterns, anticipate what might happen then decide what to do before the situation becomes urgent and correct as needed, then to continue checking it against new information.

Projection is:
i. Continuous — the mental model is constantly updated.
ii. Pre-decisional — the model is tested against what is likely to happen to see if the current plan still makes sense.
iii. Post-decisional — after taking action, the model checks the outcome was correct and whether the action was appropriate.

Projection also operates across different time horizons:
i. Immediate horizon — confirmation: “Is what I'm doing still appropriate?”
ii. Short-range horizon — adjustment: “does my plan need to change?”
iii. Long-range horizon — planning: “what am I likely to have to deal with next?”

Projection is the hinge between perception and action. The further ahead the rider can project reliably, the more time and space there is to make a controlled decision. This is a central principle of the Smith System of Driving: aim high, look far and plan early. See:

However, knowing that you are about to crash in two seconds does you no good at all. In fact, you're actually little better off than the novice rider who never even saw the threat developing. We also need a strategy to mitigate that threat.

3. Schemas — bridging the gap from projection to action

Let's introduce 'Schema Theory'. A schema is a structured framework of knowledge, a pattern built from past experience, stored in long-term memory. Schema theory isn't a complete explanation of how we act, but it's a useful concept for understanding how Situational Awareness can activate well-practised responses to familiar situations

If situational awareness is the real-time process of understanding the road, schemas are knowledge structures that help make appropriate action possible:
i. Activation — when a rider sees a cue, the brain tries to match it to a known pattern.
ii. Interpretation — the identified pattern then shapes what the rider believes is happening and what is likely to happen next.

Once Level 3 answers the “What if...?” question with the “...Then this!” answer, the recognised pattern can activate well-practised actions or procedures — sometimes described as scripts — stored in memory and which help guide the appropriate response.

Well-established perceptual and motor associations allow the rider to recognise developing conflict rapidly, and practice can make the selection and ex*****on of an appropriate evasive response faster and less cognitively demanding. For example, if a car begins to turn across the rider's path, a typical response from an experienced rider might include:

i. roll off the throttle, search for an escape route, check if the conflict is still developing
ii. counter-steer to move away from the vehicle
iii. progressive squeeze on the brakes
iv. prepare for maximum deceleration if braking distance is insufficient

The advantage isn't that the motorcycle suddenly stops more quickly. It's that an earlier, better-prepared response can begin sooner.

Schemas can operate at different levels of sophistication. In this collision avoidance example, maybe the expert rider wouldn't wait for the potential threat to materialise, but would proactively attempt to eliminate the potential conflict — positioning away from the junction to improve the line of sight, easing off the throttle, covering the brakes, and maybe sounding the horn.

Schemas thus allow for efficient responses, which reduces cognitive load, in turn freeing-up attention for alternative tasks or giving the brain a much-needed rest. Without schemas, riding would be even more mentally exhausting than it already is.

4. Lack of / Mistaken Schemas can contribute to panic reactions

Without these schemas, your brain would have to figure out how each situation encountered on the road works; from scratch; every single time you met that set of circumstances.

And as you've probably guessed, in this junction conflict you may not have long enough.

The lack of a schema is likely the direct trigger for SURPRISE! which instantly unlocks the body’s primal, frantic Survival Reactions (SRs) that I have talked about many times before.

When the Level 3 mental model of Situational Awareness fails to predict an event, or when it predicts a conflict but the rider has no well-practised response available, the resulting surprise and time pressure can contribute to unhelpful defensive reactions such as freezing, panic-braking or target fixation. The term famously coined by Keith Code in 'A Twist of the Wrist II' for these unwanted responses was 'Survival Reactions'. In truth, they are almost always the wrong thing to do on a motorcycle and usually put us deeper in trouble.

This is why novice riders tend to be more at risk from what would seem to be 'predictable' crashes than more-experienced motorcyclists.

5. Expert Schemas, Expert Errors

Experience supplies the data which makes this rapid interpretation possible but a schema is not a detailed memory. It’s a template — a compressed model of “what usually happens next” — and they are fallible.

Effective real-world performance also requires procedural knowledge: knowing how to recognise and respond to the situation, rather than merely being able to describe it. These processes are consistent with what's been termed Recognition-Primed Decision Making (RPD).

Instead of generating a list of pros and cons for different courses of action, an expert's brain recognises a familiar pattern and identifies a plausible course of action, which can then be mentally simulated or adapted as necessary. This allows experts to make high-stakes, split-second choices without lengthy deliberation. It’s efficient, but RPD depends heavily on a rich repository of experiential patterns. Novices have fewer and less-developed patterns to draw upon, while even expert riders can face novel situations and when the cues are incomplete or misleading, it can trigger the wrong response.

Broadly speaking, schemas can be:
i. over‑generalised — assuming one situation must be like another (“I’ve never had a slide in a bend, so I won’t have one in this bend”).
ii. mis‑matched — applying the wrong template (“The surface looks the same, so it must be the same”).
iii. biased — shaped by expectation rather than evidence (“Nothing ever pulls out of that driveway, so why expect it to happen today”).
iv. premature — activated before enough information is available (“The driver must have seen me because I can see them”).

Schemas don’t guarantee accuracy. They help make faster decisions — and that can be dangerous when the cues are incomplete. When the gap between the reality and the working model of the Perceptual Road opens up because of a faulty schema, the consequences include errors such as misunderstandings at junctions, over-enthusiasm in bends and over‑confidence in overtakes. The ability to revise the prediction rather than remain committed to it is just as important as making the prediction in the first place.

Many of the patterns that underpin effective schemas are strengthened through real-world experience, particularly varied experience with meaningful feedback. But they can also be developed through observation, instruction, simulation and carefully designed practice.

SUMMING UP

Perception and comprehension can make a previously learned response available. Much of the practical expression of this thinking should be familiar to anyone with a background in advanced riding — or even just a long-time history of motorcycling. Experienced riders have been executing these techniques for decades, often describing them simply as 'roadcraft', 'anticipation', or 'riding by the seat of your pants'.

The aim of this article is not to tear up the rulebook of advanced riding. Instead, it should help you dig into the “Mind Behind the Machine”, and better understand the cognitive programming that's going on in the background. This will help any rider understand themselves better and program their responses more effectively. If you're coaching, it should assist you to understand what concepts are transferred to trainees, why they have a sound basis and why they actually work.

NEXT WEEK

Yesterday on Elevenses I was discussing the extraordinary figures being reported by MAG's Colin Brown, that 21% of fatal motorcycle crashes involved the riders of stolen PTWs.

This '1 in 5' figure came from the response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted to the West Midlands Police. The data revealed that over a recent five-year period, 21% of fatal motorcycle collisions within that specific region involved a stolen bike.

As I said yesterday, I have no reason to doubt that Colin Brown is not reporting the FOI data correctly, but I instantly recalled the advice of economist Tim Harford to step back from an extraordinary claim and apply a "does this figure look real" test.

Tim Harford is also a journalist, and longtime host of BBC Radio 4’s 'More or Less' show, where he acts as a 'statistical detective', carefully check and frequently deconstructing dubious numbers that get thrown around in public discussions.

Not surprisingly, politicians are frequently a target for his fact-checking.

A couple of years ago, I added his book 'How to Make the World Add Up: Ten Rules for Thinking Differently About Numbers' (published as 'The Data Detective' in North America) to my own library as a very readable primer on how to decode numbers.

Harford’s approach is to argue that our biggest mistakes with numbers don't stem from a lack of math skills, but from our emotions. In particular he observes that when we see a statistic that conforms with our biases — or provokes sudden outrage — our critical thinking shuts down.

He says: "today's persuaders don't want you to stop and think. They want you to hurry up and feel. Don't be rushed". Harford's approach is to recognise our emotional reaction, to hit the pause button, then examine the data more carefully.

The "21% of fatal crashes involve stolen motorcycles" figure reminded me to double-check his book. It's in Chapter 4 where he advises that when we encounter an unusual statistic like this, instead of getting bogged down in the specific details of the claim, we should zoom out and and ask basic contextual questions to build a "bird's-eye view":

1. Is this number actually big or small in the grand scheme of things?

2. Is it rising or falling?

3. Can it be compared to another number that makes intuitive sense?

By stepping back, we can perform a vital sanity check. Harford illustrates how easily a small, hyper-localized, or cherry-picked dataset can be blown up to create a terrifying — but fundamentally misleading — national headline.

And that's what we have here. Even if:

1. we allow West Midlands Police have correctly collated their data across different data sets (and their record on data collection isn't too good)

2. we allow that the West Midlands is a bike theft hotspot

3. we factor-in the 'risk multiplier' for a rule-breaking, often unlicensed rider in comparison with a law-abiding, fully-licensed rider

There is no nationwide peer-reviewed or verifiable research backing this data. And so the West Midlands numbers deserve to be scrutinised carefully, particularly since a claim like "1 in 5 fatal bike crashes involve stolen machines" provokes immediate alarm about a lawless epidemic on British roads, as well as a serious question about where we're targeting funding for 'safer riders'.

Whilst studies tracking unlicensed vehicle users across Europe and the UK, suggest unlicensed operators are up to 3 times more likely to be involved in a severe or fatal injury collision relative to their actual numbers on the road, by stepping back, it's easier to see that even if the claim is mathematically true for one specific high-crime urban area, the 1 in 5 figure appears to be completely unrepresentative of national road safety.

My guess? If it's correct, then it is almost certainly a massive outlier.

Back to the book. Harford’s writing is witty, engaging, and packed with fascinating historical anecdotes (ranging from art forgery to Florence Nightingale's pioneering use of polar area diagrams).

He avoids the trap of standard cynicism; he doesn't want us to believe that all statistics are lies. Instead, he empowers us to use numbers as a telescope to see the world more clearly.

If you want to be a better thinker rather than a passive consumer of shock-horror information, this book is recommended.

Take a look at the photo. It's one really lucky pedestrian standing there, barely looking up in time to realising the car in the inside line isn't stopping to let her finish crossing. You can see how close the car came to hitting her. I dare say that plenty of readers are now shaking heads and muttering about poor driving standards.

You'd certainly be right about that particular driver. The second photo (thanks to Google Streetview) shows the layout of the crossing, straddling two lanes of a four lane road, complete with the Aussie-flavour crossing warning signs. It's not like this specific hazard is particularly difficult to spot.

Yet just the other day, I saw a rider on a Yamaha 700 do just this. A car stopped in the right-hand lane at a crossing. The biker didn't. Fortunately, the pedestrian was crossing in the opposite direction, from the pavement towards the central island, and having spotted the approaching bike, hadn't actually stepped off the pavement.

There are only two words for that kind of riding. Dumb and dangerous.

But less obvious is the threat from passing in the left-hand lane at speed when there's a queue of slow-moving or stationary vehicles in the right hand lane planning on turning right into a side road.

What's the problem? What could possibly go wrong?

If the queue is blocked and not moving, a pedestrian could cross through the queue. Or a cyclist or e-bike or e-scooter, or even another motorcyclist, could pull out of that side road and turn right in front of the stopped vehicles.

Or someone in the queue could change lane into the left-hand lane. Maybe they realised they are in the wrong lane (a lot of busy urban junctions demand local knowledge to get into the correct lane in good time), or maybe they just changed their mind and decided not to turn right after all. The result's the same – what appeared to be an empty lane a moment earlier suddenly has the front of a vehicle swinging into it. I saw this precise incident at a junction I regularly queue to turn right at just the other day.

And here's another biker booboo. Imagine you're approaching a cross roads, and planning on turning into a side turning on your right. You see cars queued in the opposing right-hand lane ready to make their own right turn, and an apparently-empty lane on the left. You think: “great, there's my gap, I can turn right” and go to commence the turn...
..just as a vehicle zips out of the blind spot from behind those right-turning vehicles, and on a collision course. The vehicle operator on the main road doesn't expect to find another vehicle turning into their path, so the usual response is horn rather than brakes. That's another near-miss I see regularly. And as biker's we've just about as vulnerable as that pedestrian would be.

Today's takeaway; undertaking isn’t a clever shortcut — it’s a two-way visibility trap.

Any time you pass on the left beside queues, turning traffic, you’re riding into a space where you have a restricted view of pedestrians, cyclists, e‑devices, other bikers or cars can challenge you for the same space. Drop the speed so you can react. .

And if you are the one doing the turn which is taking you through an apparently-empty lane, make the turn cautiously. If your view is restricted, you can’t assume it’s safe to turn because the right-turners are blocked.

Don't put your bike where your brain's not already been.

My recent post on the London Assembly vote to call on the Government to change the rules on delivery companies using motorcyclists on L plates kicked up rather more of a storm than I anticipated, I have to say. I expected the "great idea" and the "who'll deliver my pizza" responses, and duly got those. But I confess I was surprised at the number of people who confidently stated 'facts' that were completely wrong.

Maybe I shouldn't have been.

There were responses that absolutely insisted that it was "impossible" to get insurance for 'carriage and reward' on L plates, something that even a cursory look on Google would disprove. Other search engines are available but Tim Eades saved readers the problem of choosing one by flagging up a company that offers 'by the hour' delivery rider insurance at:

The other area where 'facts' got strangely twisted was on licences. There was confusion about the historical changes to motorcycle licensing, so I thought it was time for (another) look at the historical perspective of rider training and the motorcycle licensing system.

So, when did the motorcycle test come in? The answer may surprise you. It was as long ago as 1935.

To avoid a huge rush of candidates, testing began on a voluntary basis on March 13, 1935.

The test became the official on April 1, 1935. April Fool's Day.

And the test became retrospectively compulsory for people who had begun driving/riding on or after 1 April 1934. Presumably, they checked that via the date of issue of a driving licence.

A provisional licence allowed a novice to ride on the road and in an attempt to address the high number of motorcycle fatalities, the next change restricted learner riders to motorcycles of no more than 250cc. The Road Traffic Act 1962 allowed riders to ride motorcycles over 250cc after passing their test. There was an exception to this rules — you could ride any capacity of motorcycle if it was attached to a sidecar. The legislation also introduced a mechanism to force persistent provisional-licence holders to take a test: someone who had held more than seven provisional licences could be required to pass a test before being allowed another one.

In 1971, the age limit for anyone wanting to ride a 50+ cc machine was raised to 17. 16 year olds could still ride mopeds of less than 50 cc.

1977 saw a 30 mph speed restriction introduced on mopeds.

Following the 1981 Transport Act, not only was the definition of a learner motorcycle changed, but the two-part motorcycle test was introduced on 29 March 1982. It was quite different from today's Module 1/Module 2 system:

i. a learner could obtain a provisional motorcycle licence and ride on the road on L-plates without having passed Part 1

ii. take and pass Part 1 when ready, then become eligible to take Part 2, the actual licensing test.

Part 1 was an off-road machine-control test. It included basic manoeuvres and was intended to assess fundamental control skills. Part 1 could be conducted by approved training organisations, which was quite deliberate: the government wanted the new system to encourage learners towards training. Department of Transport examiners also provided Part 1 testing at some LGV centres.

The two-part system was part of a wider 1981 package which also reduced the maximum learner motorcycle from 250cc to 125cc (though you could still ride a bigger machine with a sidecar attached). It also introduced a two-year limit on provisional motorcycle entitlement; from the date of issue of the provisional motorcycle licence, you had two years to pass the motorcycle test. If you didn't, the provisional motorcycle entitlement was suspended for one year before you could apply for a free two-year provisional entitlement. The government defended the two-years-on/one-year-off system as a road-safety measure intended to encourage people to train and pass their test.

Initially Part 2 was the traditional 'round-the-block' on-road test, with the examiner assessing the rider from the roadside on foot but in 1989, the Part 2 motorcycle test became the 'pursuit' test we're familiar with today, with the examiner following the candidate, usually on another motorcycle, occasionally in a car.

Compulsory Basic Training, or CBT, was introduced in December 1990. For the first time, a learner could not simply obtain a provisional motorcycle licence and head out onto the road. They had to complete prescribed basic training before riding unsupervised. The intention was straightforward: every learner should at least demonstrate a basic level of competence before being let loose in traffic. The downside was that the test itself was conducted on a 125. A rider could legally jump straight on a GSX-R1100 as soon as they'd torn up their L plates. This was where I got involved as a qualified instructor and I remember one rider doing just that. An hour after he'd been handed his pass certificate, he rode off on his brand-new Gixxer which he'd had delivered direct to the school.

1996 saw another major change with the introduction of the motorcycle theory test.

The next big change was the Direct Access Scheme (DAS), introduced in 1997. Learners could still ride unaccompanied on L plates on a machine lf less than 125cc but things changed when you wanted to pass the motorcycle test. Riders aged under 21 were restricted to learning on 125s, and on passing the test were awarded a full motorcycle license but with a 33 hp (25 kW) power limit that lasted for two years. This was slightly problematic as there were very few new machines in this bracket. As a result, a thriving 'grey import' market sprang up, importing suitable used bikes from Japan.

But DAS also allowed riders aged 21 and over to train directly on larger motorcycles, rather than have to spend two years on the restricted bikes, but could only ride those machines under instruction. A separate instructor qualification for those training riders on larger motorcycles was also created — I was actually one of the first in the UK to hold that certification.

On 1 February 2001 the “two years on, one year off” CBT rule was abolished because the government had concluded that the resulting year-long riding ban was actually counterproductive because riders could lose skills while they were prohibited from riding.

The Hazard Perception test was added to the Theory Test in November 2002.

In 2013, European legislation produced another substantial reshuffle. The old licensing structure was replaced by the current AM, A1, A2 and A categories, with age and power restrictions defining the progression. The UK opted to require a fresh motorcycle test pass at each level. The practical test itself also evolved, eventually becoming the modern Module 1 off-road manoeuvring test followed by the Module 2 on-road test.

And that's where we are today. Learners can still ride on a provisional licence, CBT, theory test, practical test and, depending on age and experience, a choice of staged progression or direct access.

As well as the factual element, the changes show how the philosophy of motorcycle training and licensing has changed over time. But there's a feedback into last week's article too. Over seventy years we've continually changed what a rider must do to obtain a licence — compulsory training, theory testing, hazard perception, manoeuvring exercises, road tests, instructor qualifications and graduated licence categories — but have we actually managed to answer the one fundamental question:

"What does somebody actually need to learn to become a safe, competent motorcyclist?"

Perhaps the history of motorcycle training isn't really a story of continuous improvement to rider training, perhaps it's a history of repeatedly discovering that passing a test and competent riding are not quite the same thing.
