What does life after work actually look like? It can mean stepping back – or, it can mean rediscovering long-lost passions, returning to university or training for a new vocation. ✨

At our recent UCL Connect event, Life after work: how to make the most of your retirement, alumni panellists Dr Margaret Mountford, Tanya Chakravarti, and Huw Williams joined chair Prof Paul Higgs to discuss how leaving full-time work gave our alumni fresh opportunities to learn, reconnect, and reinvent themselves.

Head to the link below to read their candid lessons on staying curious, building community, and shaping a purposeful next chapter👇

UCL researchers have co-developed a new toolkit to support educators in teaching responsible AI globally.

The AI Research Foundations Toolkit, developed with colleagues at the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences, is a suite of educational tools which embed and build on online courses developed by Google DeepMind. Google DeepMind was co-founded by UCL alumnus Sir Demis Hassabis.

The toolkit is designed for lecturers anywhere to adapt to their classrooms. It includes over fifty hours of flexible lesson plans, coding notebooks, and case studies developed in collaboration with educators and researchers across Africa.

Rather than focusing purely on machine learning algorithms, the curriculum integrates technical training with ethics, philosophy, and social responsibility to help students build technology that aligns with societal values.

Neurosurgeons at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), UCLH - University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, have used real-time artificial intelligence during live surgery to safely remove a pituitary brain tumour and protect a patient's sight.

Developed at the UCL Hawkes Institute and funded by the NIHR and Google, the AI analysed live surgical video feeds to help the team navigate critical blood vessels and optic nerves where a single millimetre of error could cause blindness.

The patient, 48-year-old Rhys Hibbert, had previously lost peripheral vision due to the tumour, but experienced an immediate, dramatic restoration of his sight and was walking independently within a week of the operation. This breakthrough clinical trial highlights how UCL-developed technology is enhancing surgical precision and transforming patient outcomes across the NHS.

Here, we build technology that changes lives.
