"Our need to house people – a need that may be predominantly driven by climate migration sooner than we think – is contributing heavily to greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss. This will increase the severity of the climate crisis and drive further climate migration, which will, in turn, create further need for housing. In most cases, every time we build a house, we are making this situation worse."

The Urban95 Academy brings together practical insights from urban design, behavioural science and systems thinking to help municipal leaders initiate child-sensitive changes in their cities.

The Academy offers a seven-week, fully sponsored, online-course, exploring how the fundamental elements of urban life, such as streets, transportation, and air quality, impact the life outcomes of young urban dwellers, and how informed social and spatial interventions can have positive impacts both for young children and their carers as well as for society more widely.

At the end of the online course, ten cities, with promising ideas for local challenges facing young children and caregivers, are selected to come to London for an all-expenses-paid week of intensive workshops, and site visits to hone their strategy for implementation.

Apply now (deadline 30 April) to join this amazing growing network of committed cities worldwide sharing knowledge about designing more equitable and sustainable cities that support the needs of young children.

A new report by Transport & Environment finds that transport is becoming the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe with road transport making up half the sectors emissions.

Philipp Rode from LSE Cities is currently working with colleagues across Europe on research that explores what a fair transition might look like in urban mobility and builds on the sufficiency principles to change mobility habits through individual mobility budgets.

He feels that it is unlikely that technology alone will help given potent rebound effects of any efficiency gains and that eventually questions of sufficiency will have to be addressed. Given the relative lack of progress, increasingly polarising political debate and urgent requirement for change, his recent paper advocates for a more direct and open engagement with a sufficiency turn in urban transport. And that, most importantly, fundamental questions about a fair distribution of remaining emissions and finite street space within the transport sector will have to be considered.
