PACEY asked parents whether their child was ready. 9 in 10 said yes.
‎
But when they asked teacher about the same children. 1 in 3.
‎
GOV.UK is clear that school readiness is mostly about independence — managing a coat, opening a lunchbox, asking an adult for help. That's what the early days at school focus on.
‎
The cards in this picture are what comes next. Early reading. Sounds they can picture. And (we think!) silly sentences that stick. The best kind of learning doesn't feel like learning at all :)

If your little one is starting school this September, here's a classic way of learning through play.

Put your Number cards on the floor, in the right order but with one number missing. Then ask them which one is missing.

Spotting which one is missing is harder than counting to it. They have to hold the order in their head rather than read it. That's the difference between reciting and knowing.

And if that gets too easy, use more numbers! Our Number cards go all the way to 110 :)

Reciting numbers and understanding them are different skills for the Reception age.

Here's a ten-second test.

Put out a small pile, ask your little one to give you four.

If four come back, then they're relating numbers to the real world. If they give you a handful, that's completely normal at 4 — and you've just learned more in ten seconds than a week of counting to twenty told you.

It's also exactly what the dots side of our Numbers cards are for. There's a digit on one side, and the corresponding number of dots on the other.

Everyone's thinking about September this month. And if you're worrying about maths, it's worth knowing what Reception is actually looking for.

Recognising the digit and understanding the quantity are separate things.

It's more about building confidence - which comes from using numbers in the real world.

Like knowing that the word five means five real things.

You can do this in the ordinary bits of the day. Count the peas at dinner, count the stairs on the way up, count the socks coming out of the machine, or the apples going in the trolley. You get the idea.

For school joiners, it's definitely not about the sums yet.

Our Numbers deck has the written words, AND dots to match - so you can lay real objects onto them. There are eight games in the pack.

That last one is the tell. It means she's thinking about sounds rather than guessing at words.

School in September? Two weeks of August gone. Already!

This one is called Find the animal.

All the cards on the floor, letter side up. You call a sound the way it's written on the Pronunciation Card — "Can you find the p-p-penguin?" — and they go looking.

Then swap over and let them run it. They will be stricter than you were.

It works because calling a sound out loud is harder than recognising one. They just don't experience it that way.

If the floor's already occupied, the deck's second game is Sound hunt: pick one card, then go and find things around the house that start with it.

Why shouldn't a whale go waterskiing, a bear play badminton, or a penguin go paddleboarding?

A letter on its own is easy to forget. So we pair ours with an animal friend. It gives every sound somewhere to live. And something to giggle at.

When they're learning to read, the sound is the one doing the work. Ess is the name. Sss is the sound.

You don't have to correct them when they use the name. Just say the sound back in passing and carry on. "Yep — sss. Snake."
