We welcomed representatives from engineering company ALSTOM to Merton, where they set a live brief for our Level 3 Engineering students to work in teams to develop and deliver highly technical presentations. The Alstom team included Robert Greenbrook, Technical Support Manager; Andrew McLauchlan, Depot Manager; Li Kiho, Engineering Manager; and Hamza Khan, Fleet Maintenance Lead Engineer. All were impressed by our students’ innovative ideas, technical insight and attention to detail - and highlighted the effort and thought put into each response.
Judging is now underway, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners to be announced at a highly anticipated presentation on 9 June.
Our students thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and real-world experience which this live brief offered them. A big thank you to Alstom for providing our students with this opportunity.

As part of last month's Green Week and in celebration of World Earth Day on 22 April, Merton College invested £800 in a new Green Planting Initiative to help enhance the natural environment across our campus. With the support of Ryan from CJB Contractors, a gardening and grounds maintenance business, our ESOL 16–18 and Supported Learning students and staff planted a range of plants to boost biodiversity, enhance green spaces and support a healthier, more sustainable campus. The flowerbeds outside the canteen were chosen for the new planting, so that more students and staff can enjoy the space.
Ryan also installed a post with bird boxes, bug hotel and butterfly barn into the flower bed, which all make a huge difference to the whole area. The project brought the students and staff together to work as a team and and will continue to do so as they look after the space in future.

Level 3 Engineering and T Level students recently experienced the fantastic opportunity to visit the British Airways Head Office at Heathrow Airport. The day started with an exciting Dragon’s Den style activity, where students worked in teams to come up with innovative ideas aimed at enhancing the passenger experience for British Airways. There was also a series of informative talks from guest speakers, who provided valuable insights into the wide range of career opportunities available within British Airways. This gave students a real understanding of the pathways open to them in the aviation industry.
A particular highlight was hearing from current British Airways apprentices. They spoke passionately about their experiences, the skills they have gained and the journey they have undertaken. The visit concluded with a detailed overview of British Airways’ Apprenticeship Programmes, including guidance on the application process. This proved extremely beneficial, with many of our students expressing a keen interest in exploring these opportunities in the future.
This inspiring and engaging visit has helped our students gain valuable insight into careers within the aviation sector.
