If piano practice at home is turning into a battle, it may simply be because it feels too long or too much for your child.
For a 6-year-old beginner, piano practice does not need to be long, and children often do better with short sessions they can manage happily.
Try this simple 10-minute routine:
1 minute - sit properly, warm up fingers, get ready
3 minutes - clap or tap the rhythm first
3 minutes - practise just a tiny part of the piece
2 minutes - read one short line slowly
1 minute - play something they enjoy
Ten calm minutes a few times a week will usually do much more than one long, stressful practice session.
At MuseCool, we often help families find small routines that actually fit into real life, especially for young beginners.

ABRSM exams can be a great motivation for children… but they can also make music feel like a chore.
It really depends on how they’re approached.
A healthy path towards ABRSM usually looks something like this:
• building strong foundations first (rhythm, reading, technique)
• celebrating small wins each week - confidence matters a lot
• practice that fits real family life (short and regular is better than long and stressful)
• seeing exams as milestones, not pressure
If your child is around 6 and just starting piano, it’s often better to focus on the basics first and then decide together with a teacher when an exam makes sense.
At MuseCool we support ABRSM preparation for children across London - both online and in-person- with a calm, structured approach.
If you’re wondering whether your child might be ready for ABRSM, we’re always happy to chat.

Incredibly proud of our team for getting us to this point - now here's to listening to our users and making it really good bit by bit, as the world starts to adopt it.

In-person or online music lessons for kids in London - which actually works better?
Honestly? It depends on your child… and your weekly routine.
In-person lessons can be lovely if:
• your child feels more confident in their own space
• after-school travel feels like too much
• you want everything (lesson + practice) happening in one familiar place
Online lessons can work beautifully if:
• you’d like more choice of teachers or times
• your weeks are unpredictable
• your child focuses well in short, structured screen sessions
The format isn’t usually the problem.
The real issue is structure.
If no one can clearly explain what your child will learn in the first 4–8 weeks - posture, rhythm, reading, first pieces - progress can feel random, whether it’s online or in-person.
At MuseCool, we offer both formats across London and help families choose what genuinely fits - not just what sounds convenient.

London parents - if you’re looking for piano lessons for a 6-year-old, try not to start with ‘who’s cheapest?’ - Start with fit!
At this age, the first few months matter more than people realise.
Before booking, here are 7 questions worth asking any teacher or school:
• Do you regularly teach 5–7 year-old beginners?
• How do you structure the first month?
• What practice routine do you recommend (realistic for busy families)?
• Do you give feedback after each lesson?
• What’s your DBS / safeguarding process?
• How do you adapt for attention span or confidence?
• What should progress look like after 8–12 weeks?
The answers will tell you a lot.
We’re a London-based music school offering structured online and in-person piano lessons for young beginners!
