We are pleased to announce that Nick, aka Wordcolour, has joined the stellar LSEM tutor roster! 🤝🚀

Described by FACT Magazine as “one of the UK’s brightest new club producers” and named a ‘One To Watch’ by The Guardian, Nick brings a wealth of experience to the team. With a decade of teaching under his belt and a discography spanning Houndstooth, Lapsus, and his own TiHKAL imprint, Nick’s expertise ranges from trippy peak-time club gear to intricate, experimental sound design.

You can now book Nick for 1-on-1 Production and DJing mentorship. Whether you’re just opening Ableton for the first time, looking to get your kicks club-ready, or finishing your next EP, Nick is here to help you navigate the journey.

To kick things off, he’s shared a quick masterclass on using Parallel Compression to give your drums professional weight and punch. 🔊

Watch the video to see how to:
‣ Balance transients and decay for a fuller sound.
‣ Dial in the perfect compressor settings for a “wet” signal.
‣ Blend for maximum impact.

Whatever level you’re working at, let’s get to work on your sound.

🔄 The Secret to a Professional Backspin

LSEM DJ mentor Claudia Kane is pulling back the curtain on one of the most iconic club transitions: The Backspin.

A basic backspin can sound messy, but with the right chain of effects, it becomes a cinematic transition. Here’s exactly how I set this up:

‣ The Setup: Find a melodic phrase and mark it with a Hot Cue so you never lose your exit point.

‣ The Safety Net: Set a 4 or 8-beat loop to give yourself time to prep the mix.

‣ The FX Chain: Dial in your Reverb and Filter. The reverb is what creates that “ghosty tail” so the sound doesn’t just vanish.

‣ The Pro Move: Set your Jog Adjust to “Light.” This allows the platter to spin freely for that long, decaying effect.

Step-by-step breakdown in the video! ⬆️

💾 Save this for your next studio session.
